HEN it comes (o revis­ ing a class-leader like BMW’s 5 Series, there


are two schools of thought to fol­


low. The first guards against rest­


ing on laurels and aims to con­ stantly move the game forward. The second questions the wis­ dom of messing with a winning


formula. It should not take long at the


wheel of BMW’s latest 5 Scries to realise that the Bavarians have been conscious of both. There is plenty to move the


game forward: three new petrol engines and an all-new diesel


for a start. But there is also much that seeks not to change what is undeniably a winning formula: the latest styling for a


start. Fortunately for UK buyers,


prices are sharper these days, though have risen slightly in recent times with the addition of alloy wheels and the clever DSC III stability control system as standard equipment on all mod­
