SUBSTANCE OVER I dreams STILO L

ET’S face it, when we get into a Fiat, any Fiat, we do so armed with a vast weight of expectation.
Unlike sportier cousin Alfa Romeo (handle
beautifully, let go spectacularly in a choking cloud of rust), a Fiat is expected to be cheap,
tinny, vibrant. mny viunuiv Both expectations are

massively wide of the mark these days. The Fiat Stilo’s inherent build quality hammers this point home. Fans of this most Ital
ian of marques now see their offerings converg ing with those of rivals such as Ford, Volkswa
gen and Peugeot. Most car manufactur
ers seem to have cracked the issue of impeccable interior quality and Fiat has certainly joined that
band. Taking a short drive m . .
a Stilo confirms this. Bar perhaps safety, no other area of car design has progressed so far so fast. Drive a 10-year-old
car, even the best built — a Mercedes S-class, for instance—and the interi or fit and finish will feel cheap next to the Stilo.
This is precisely the effect that Fiat were
after. Like the Brava and
Bravo lines that it
replaces, the Stilo looks quite different in three and five-door guises. Although the two van- ants sit on the same

P'S rand New NISSAN Terrano Z.i SE II; metallic green over wheat, sunroof, great value
have cleverly teased the five-door bodyshell into a shape 50mm higher, 28mm wider and 66mm
longer. What the Stilo five- door pulls off more clev
erly than all of its rivals is the incorporation of a
number of ideas from MPVs, such as sliding and reclining rear seats, folding tray tables and a multitude of “cubbies”,
drawers, boxes and cupholders. The three-door- model is a different proposi
tion. Lower, more aggressive and to most, more attractive, it shares only bonnet headlamps and grille with its more practical sibling. Safety is well taken
care of, with even entry- level models fitted with no fewer than eight airbags (two at the front, four side bags and curtains that shield you from the windows), plus
five three-point seat belts, anti-lock brakes and a traction control
system. Move up the range
and the sportier models get electronic stability
control. Five engine options
are available to UK Stilo customers. The range
kicks off with an 80 b.h.p. 1.2-litre engine, although most buyers
will probably plump for either the 103 b.h.p. 1.6-
litre unit or a zippy 133 b.h.p. 1.8-litre power
plant. Those looking for a lU U IC m iw v iw ---------- -
more muscle can opt for a 2.4-litre 20v five-cylin
der unit and those after
more fuel economy should plump for the 53.3 m.p.g .capability of the 115 b.h.p. 1.9JTD
diesel. This is a high-tech, if
somewhat noisy, diesel
engine that has the sort of mid-range overtaking
power and parsimony that makes sense to UK buyers and should prove itself popular.
The Stilo represents
soft, comfortable, safe transport for five with
an enviable level of qual
ity, a sharp suit and a number of slick ideas. For the average family
hatchback customer the Stilo hits the bull’s-eye, but the Fiat is not going to appear above the Golf, 307 and Focus in many comparison tests that we can imagine.
Do not let that dis suade you, its priorities
are just different. As Antony Sheriff,
Fiat’s head of product development, notes: “The very essence of the Stilo is its substance.” Think about what you
really use the family hatchback for, test drive the Stilo and see if it does not tick all the boxes.
pete with BMW, Audi and the rest of the pres tige executive establish
O not have to com
ment. The company’s cars
were bought by people who wanted something different, be that better
or worse. Today, much has
changed. The marque is now largely owned by General Motors, which means a boardroom desire to stretch out beyond the individualist
market. And a need for a prod
uct range which is all turbo-charged plus both characterful and compet
itive; at the very least strong enough to cause the Germans a few sleepless nights. It would probably be
fair to say that the old Saab 900 line-up was not
quite where the Swedes wanted to be in this
respect. Its replacement, the 9
3, has changed all that. In the larger 9-5 range, the company’s engineers had already proved that they could deliver a car for the enthusiastic exec
utive. Much of the same
magic was breathed upon the 9-3 range, a line-up which even in entry-level petrol form (priced from £17,245) is
now powered by a recently revised 2.0-litre turbo-charged engine developing some 150
b.h.p. This 150 b.h.p. engine
is now claimed to be 5% more fuel efficient, thanks to revised gear ratios. As a result, the CO2 rating has been cut from 213 to a competitive 201g/km, giving a useful two-band reduction in company car taxation.
This unit is also fitted with electronic throttle control, for greater per formance and flexibility. Fuel consumption is not bad either: expect 31.7 m.p.g. over the combined
cycle. The ride-once the
900’s worst feature - is now the 9-3’s most endearing quality, feath ering the driver where once it would have thumped him or her. The range starts with
the 125 b.h.p. 2.2 TiD turbo-diesel or the entry-level 150 b.h.p. 2.0t Ecopower petrol unit in cither standard or SE- level guises. All models now get air
conditioning, an upgrad ed stereo, an advanced alarm system and new wheel designs, while SE trim has now been
upgraded with a “real carbon fibre fascia and new combination lcather/textile seating and leather door trims, plus “fan-formation” five-spoke 16in. alloy
wheels. At SE level, there is
also a 2.0T unit develop ing 185 b.h.p., while the even faster 2.0HOT engine used in the new flagship Aero model puts
out 205 b.h.p. If you want a 9-3 Con
vertible, there is the option of all three petrol engines, the range start ing at £25,095 for the 150 b.h.p. 2.0t 9-3 SE model. A sportier 185 b.h.p.
2.0T SE version sits fur ther up the line-up, with a flagship Aero model now the most desirable Saab drop-top, priced at
£28,995.
