Former Brockhall Hospital nurse known as ‘Sister Sunshine’ dies

A FORMER Brockhall Hos pital nursing sister with a big heart, known as "sister sun shine," has died at the age of 89.

Mrs Ann Brady (pictured)

died peacefully at the Abbey- dale Rest Home, in Whalley. The Darwen-born nurse was an immensely popular figure with both staff and patients at Brockhall Hospital up to her retirement in 1970. Her boundless generosity of

spirit and kindness had earned her the affectionate nickname of "sister sunshine." Her popularity and altruistic qualities extended beyond the realms of the nursing ward as she performed many selfless acts of charity in the

local community. "Her personality bubbled. She

was so friendly with a big smile for everyone," said her daughter, Mrs Ann Howarth, from her Whalley home amid dozens of cards of sym pathy and bouquets. Mrs Brady was the wife of Mr

Joseph Patrick Brady, to whom she was married for 33 years before he died of a heart condition. Together, they ran a confectionery shop in Clayton-le-Moors for many years, before she returned to her nursing career and took up a nursing sister post at Brockhall Hospital and moved to Langho. In addition to Mrs Howarth, she

had a son, Peter, who was tragical ly struck down by an illness in Sici ly at the age of 33. As a typical ges ture, she helped set up a scholarship scheme in his memory at Leicester

University, where her son, a doctor of philosophy, taught. The scheme helped fund students who wanted

to travel abroad. Her faith was a guiding force m

her life and as a devout Roman Catholic, she regularly attended St Mary's Church, Langho, and helped raise money for its funds. A keen music-lover, she was

always keen to hear her daughter, a well-known local amateur singer, perform. As well as by Mrs Howarth, Mrs Brady will be missed by her grandson, David, her granddaughter, Jo-Anna, and her

son-in-law, Roy. She died peacefully after a long illness. A requiem mass was held for her at the Church of

the English Martyrs, Whalley. Mrs Howarth said; "It was a

beautiful mass, with her favourite song played — 'When I Grow Too

PHILIP^

Old to Dream'. She was such an energetic woman with a real lust for life. I imagine she will be in Heaven throwing a party now." In addition, Mrs Brady's

favourite hymns were sung and her dearest prayer was said. It rea.ds; "Angel of God my Guardian dear/To whom Gods love permits me here/Ever this night be at rriy side/ To watch, to guard, to rule

and guide." Mrs Howarth said: "I would like

to thank the many people who have sent cards and flowers of sympathy. I am also very grateful to the staff at the Abbeydale Rest Home. They were so caring and lovely. My mother found a bit of Heaven there. She struggled with her illness for many years but she never lost her sunny smile and her gratitude to everyone who cared for her."
