Exciting launch for town s joint transport initiative

Bid to reduce role of the car in the Valley

by Tim Procter

I THERE were hopes for a lesser role for the car in the future when an official ceremony for mally launcheti work on Clitheroe transport interchange.

I Plans have been gather ing speed for some time, and clearance of parts of the former garage site in Railway View Road has already been completed. The interchange - based

rural bus initiative, although Lancashire Coun ty Council is providing nearly a third, with £45,000 from Ribble Valley. Councillors and officials

from both authorities were present for the launch, which was by tho chairman

,

on a well-equipped bus sta tion - will facilitate bus, rail, cycle and even foot travel. As previously reported, the new terminus could be a national "first",

as a key feature will be a control centre with staff able to actively help people

I complete their journeys. A large proportion of the

1 £336,000 cost is coming tho Government’s

of tho county Highways and Transportation Com mittee, County Coun. Richard Toon. He and col leagues travelled to Clitheroe in a user-friendly new bus specially designed for easy access by children and the disabled, and with room for wheelchairs. Also represented at tho

launch were Railtrack, which is giving £20,000, First North Western Trains, whose contribution will be £17,500, and Ribble

improve services to rural

areas. The plans for the long-

awaited transport improve ments in Clitheroe were finalised just at the time the Government launched its "go greener and use cars less initiative". So the project was well placed to obtain a

big grant. County Coun. Toon said:

"If people are to be per suaded to use their cars less, then we have to provide ways in which they can travel easily and with the minimum of fuss." The interchange, he said,

would bring new confidence to the use of public trans

port. The chief executive of

Valley Rail, whose £1,000 donation will go tovvards a clock. Stagecoach is con tributing to a "quality bus initiative" with the local and county councils to

Stagecoach North-West, Mr Mike Chambers, also urged that the car be seen as less important. Bringing tho interchange plans to fruition were a key feature in giving the public confi dence in practical altern-

Euro vote turnout a danining verdict on voting system - MP

THERE was widespread unease in the Ribble Valley about the Euro elec tions, although the turnout was more than in many places.

Even Conservative MP

Mr Nigel Evans was unhappy — despite the fact th a t th e co n s titu en cy showed the biggest turnout in the area, 27 per cent, and th a t over half the vote rs placed th e ir cross in the Conservative

box. "People all over the coun

try delivered their damning verdict on tlie wretched proportional representation European electoral system foisted upon them by stay ing at home in droves," declared Mr Evans. He feels that power has been stolon from the voters, who want to support an individ ual candidate, not a party.

The Conservatives did

very well all over the area, getting most votes in Ribblo Valley, Pendle, Hyndburn, and Rossendale and being only a little behind Labour in Blackburn and Burnley. In the Rihble Valley, the

party polled 10,259, with 3,581 for Labour. The 2,723 for the Liberal Democrats put them in third place - and shows that they are a party in crisis, suggested

Mr Evans. But local Liberal Democ

rat loader Coun. Howcl Jones points out that the parly now has nine MEPs, against two before the elec tion. "And it was effectively fought on ono single issue, whereas wo Liberal Democ

rats have an excellent record locally across all rele vant issues," countered

Coun. Jones. The previous system

meant tha t this area was represented by a Labour MEP, Mark Hendrick. He failed to secure a seat this time, as Labour had enough votes for only four seats but ho was sixth preference on

their list. Tho Conservatives have

five MEP seats, with for mer South Ribble MP Sir Robert .Mkins probably tho best known winner. The 10th seat for the region went to Chris Davies, who visited the area recently with Sir Cyril Smith.

Men involved in police chase after catering trailer theft are Jailed

THE owner of a mobile catering trailer arrived in Taylor Street, Clitheroe, just in time to see it being towed away.

Blackburn magistrates

heard th a t Beverley Brunker immediately aler ted the police, who wore able to stop tho thieves, as they headed along the main road towards Blackburn with the £4,500 unit in tow. Simon King (29), of

Harold Avenue, Burnley, and Stewart Cliarles Sturdy (28), of Venice Avenue, Burnley, wore each jailed for three months after pleading guilty to theft. They were both jailed for a further month for being in breach of a conditional dis charge imposed for an offence of dislionosty. Miss Paula Grogan (prosecuting) said Miss

Brunkor kept tho unit in Taylor Street close to some industrial units. Tho lyres had become deflated and the trailer was resting on stabilisers. "Despite that, as Miss

Brunkor arrived slio was in time to see the unit being towed away' behind a I'ord Escort van," said Miss Gro-

gan. Jane Potter, for King,

said her client was called upon by Sturdy to liclp him remove the trailer. However, Miss Rifat Parvecn, for Sturdy, said it was King who had asked for assis tance. "When tliey got there he still did not know the trailer was stolen," she said. Sentencing tho two men.

stipendiary magistrate Jonathon Finestoin said he took a very serious view of the offence. They wore in breach of a conditional clis- chargo imposed for a joint offence involving dishon esty and had teamed up for the latest offence. "There is no question of

it being a spur of tho moment offence," said Mr Finoslein. "You had with you the equipment to inflate the tyres and there is no question that this was premeditated and deliber ate. Fortunately for the owner, and tliat was a remarkable coincidence: she saw you committing the offence, otherwise, you may well have got away with it."
