But this yoai'i was a case of dodging the sliyers and some
events moving indoors. Visitors were treated to stalls set up
by local organisations including the Guidos, Mother's Union and Wf. And youngsters were given the
chance to try their hand at a coconut shy and take a trip on a miniature
railway. A football competition was organ
ised between the girls and boys and there was a road race tor tho adults. Musical entertainment wiis provid
ed by the Baxendale Concert Band. Organisers are still counting the
proceeds but fear there will be a dip in funds because of the weather. Our pictures show, right, Sarah

Be observant to help endangered species, urges wildlife officer
Call in for friendly, no obligation advice only at
"TAKE note, bo observant, report back" was the mes sage to members of the University of the 'Ihiid A ^ when their monthly meeting was addressed by PC Maria Graham, Wildlife Officer of
Lanca.shire Con
stabulary. The speaker showed WHALLEY ROAD,
j READ, Nr. BURNLEY I Telephone: 01282
slides to illustrate her work and emphasised clearly what is and is not allowed regarding wildlife subjects. For example, a more diverse one was wild bird egg col lecting - not allowed, to taxidermy - allowed in cer tain circumstances. Tho
me.ssago in her talk
came through clearly. Tho Wildlife Officer cannot be everywhere, but everyone can be observant and note car numbers, countryside anomalies, disturbed wildlife habitats, and suspi cious behaviour. Then
report these things so action can be taken to preserve our endangered species. PC Graham was thanked for her valuable and interesting presentation by Ian Rob bins. Tho U3A bolds its general monthly meeting on the second Tuesday of tho
month. q'ho next meeting
includes a talk on "Meteo rology" by Mr R.C. Smit ten and is on July 13tb at 2- 30 p.m. in the Ciitheroe Library Mooting Room (not as normal in tho Parish Church Hall).
