Driver slumped over wheel four times over limit
A W OM AN found slumped over the steering
wheel of her car in the car park at Club was more than four times the legal drin
drive limit. The club steward who
found her sent for an ambu lance, thinking she was injured and not merely drunk, Blackburn magis
trates heard. Sylvia Tomlinson (62), of
Alexander Close, Baxenden, pleaded guilty to driving
mth excess alcohol and was put on probation for two years and disqualified from driving for six years. The court heard that
when breathalysed she gave a reading of 151 against the
legal limit of 35. Mr Paul Grogan (prose
cuting) said the golf club steward walked across the car park and noticed noth ing untoward. When he returned, a few minutes later, Tomlinson's car had collided with a fence and she was slumped over the wheel. Mr Kevin Preston
(defending) said the car had been parked and had rolled
into the fence. "She is an alcoholic, to be
blunt, and had an argument with her mother, said Mr Preston. "She sat in the c^r and drank a bottle of gin." Tomlinson, who told the
court she was currently staying at her mother s home in Whalley Road, Pendleton, was told that people who give such a high reading normally went to
prison. Stipendiary magistrate
Jonathon Finestein said; "You are 62 years of age and you have never been in trou ble before, but this is a very serious matter. I am sen tencing you on the basis that the engine was not started and you freewheeled a few yards. You must not drive again while you are drinking. On this evidence, you will cause serious injury or even kill yourself or someone else."

N E A R L Y 160 competitors steeled themselves to finish in one of three events in this year's Whalley Nab Race — and I was one of them . . .
just! In a bid to make this year's
race, sponsored by Whalley Spar and Coulton's Florists, more of a community event, a children s heat was organised, as was a two- mile run encouraging more fun- runners to take part. The chil dren's event was a great success.

was five-year-old Connor Buntin and some of the older competitors in the senior race were in their 70s. The main attraction was the full-

on masochists' knees-up traversing a ridiculous gradient up the Nab, on to York Village, veering past Dean Clough Reservoir and up the back of the Nab and do\vn it again
back into Whalley. For the second year in succes
sion, Andy Morgan-Lee, from Southampton, won the race in the second fastest recorded time of 39 minutes and 38 seconds (full results below). His participation reflects the widening popularity of the event, which is gaining a creditable- ble reputation among the running
fraternity.
The fastest local was Chris Fishlock, who came in fourth in 41
.
minutes and 48 seconds, and a spe cial mention should go to super-fit Whalleyl5-year-old Liam Parker,
who won both the children's event and the short course race. For my part, I managed to finish
71st out of 77 in the time of one hour three minutes and 15 seconds.
Each second of that was accompa nied by a bucket full of pain and sweat — I was glad just to stagger over the finishing line. And I would like to thank my
good friend, Whalley surveyor and pub orator extraordinaire John Atherton. Were it not for his words of encouragement, I would not have even thought of subjecting my body to the tortured assault. 'Come on, you've got to do it. I
smok^about 20 fa^s a day and
my mates do it every year, - come with us, it'll be a laugh," John assured me in the Whalley Arms a
few nights before the race. So there I was. No. 242 embla
zoned on my chest, five minutes tq go before the off, thinking: "What on earth am I doing here" - and was Mr Atherton and friends any where to be seen? No they were not, apparently trying to get their fluid levels up before the race by taking in several glasses of beer in the Arms. Needless to say, I was left to tackle the Nab alone - so thanks, John, I could not have done it without your sterling example. Organiser John Smith said the
event was a great success and had successfully raised nearly £300 for the Whalley Guides and Scouts Mini-Bus Appeal. He thanked
everyone who had helped organise the event, particularly mini-bus fund-raising committee secretary Jackie Gallimore, who was instru mental in the organisation of the event, and the RAYNET group who stewarded the course with a
walkie-talkie link-up. Former organiser John Davies
commented: "It's really starting to take-off as a community event. Serious runners see it as a tough and challenging course, but it's open to all ages. Everyone can have
a go." Our picture shows veteran
Olympic marathon runner Dr Ron Hill MBE starting this year's junior Nab race. (130699/08/04)

Getting ready for celebration snags with MiUeniiimn
THE emergency services are gearing up for Mil lennium celebrations in the face of a W g e num ber of unknown and difficult-to-pred)ct factors. All are concerned to lance cover are being
make sure that staff and resources such as ambu lances and hospital beds are available to deal with the large number of likely minor incidents and the possibility of any major
ones. However, other problems
could arise over the Millen nium holidays, such as diffi culties in getting prescrip
tions dispensed. The Lancashire Ambu
lance Service NHS Trust's Millennium Working Group heard that leave had been cancelled for the ser vice. There were concerns about transport difficulties for everyone over the Mil lennium period, made worse by possible adverse weather, the lack of buses and taxis and what the minutes of the meeting describe as "the added problem of wide spread alcohol consump
tion." Varied levels of ambu-
arranged to eiable instant response to minor or major incidents on a "hit squad" basis, with extra training
for staff. Vehicles noimally used
during the dky for out patient transport will be available round the clock to help get people home from accident and emergency
departments.The Black
burn hospitals, which take most of the Ribble Valley's cases, are stopping non urgent surgery a week before the Millennium. Wards wiU remain open and over-staffed, to dlow flexi
bility. The meeting heard that
the maternity se.-vices did not believe there vould be a baby boom. But there could be a
problem with funerals - cemeteries and crematoria may well have to open on some Bank Holidays, it was stated.
