Soccer sixes attract 100 teams


T seemed as though the entire youth of East Lan­ cashire and the Ribbie Valley descended on

Clitheroe. Readstone United and


Clitheroe Wolves joined forced for their annual Junior Soccer Sixes Tournament at


Roefield. The weather may not have


been great, but the enthusi­ asm of the 800 boys who took part made up for the lack of


sunshine. The 104 teams, ranging


from eight to 16 years old, were drawn from as far apart as Bury and Heysham to compete with the locals. The Ribbie Valley Mayor,


Coun. Brian Collis, who him­ self has been involved with local football at Ribchester for the last 30 years, opened the tournament. He kicked off the first


game between the Wolves Md Readstone, which ended in a diplomatic 1-1 draw. The Under 8s section was


won by Brandlesholme of Bury, who beat Borrowdale


United of Burnley. Blackburn Academy Boys


won the Under 9s competi­ tion, beating Akzo Nobel of Darwen, while Fulledge Colts came away with both the Under 10s and 11s, beating Whalley Juniors and Black- bum Academy respectively. Brownhill Park of Burnley


beat Langho for the Under 12 crown, with Blackburn Eagles beating Huncoat


United for the Under 13 title. Blackburn Academy beat


Brownhill in the Under 14s section, with Knuzden seeing oft the Wolves in the Under


15s group. Borrowdale United won the


Under 16s section with victo­ ry over Feniscowles. Readstone and the Wolves


handed over a cheque for £750 to the Kosovo Refugee Appeal, which they raised during a sponsored charity


match in May. Tournament organiser


David Eaves said: "Again we had a very successful tourna­


ment. "The enthusiasm of the


boys has been quite over­ whelming, and the standard of the football has been extremely high."
