school this September, while his 13-year-old daughter, who is already there and who will also need a new uniform, will receive no financial help, oven though she too will need new clothes, including a £35
blazer. He said: "1 will have to
find about £120 tor my daughter and around £160 tor my son, even after the £90 grant. Children grow whatever age they are and I am currently having to find the money for new uniforms every two years. The coun ty council is taking money off families like mine instead of giving us more." The parent said ho
learned about the cuts when he contacted the education department to discover when application forms for
wouW be available. I was told letters were
being sent out to people regarding the school grants and that there would be big changes to the council's pol icy. No explanation was given and I was told just to wait until I received the let ter," he said. "The county council
could have told us sooner about the cuts, so I could have had more time to save up. Instead, it is nearly the beginning of the summer holidays and I have about eight weeks to raise the
money. "I do not work, as I have
no family nearby to help me look after the children. When they get a bit older I will be able to return to work, but until then we need any financial assis tance we can get." A spokesperson for Lan
cashire County Council said the local education authority had decided to reduce the expenditure on welfare items to maintain others areas of the educa tion sector, but it would still be providing school clothing grants for those children who qualified, for when they changed school. A one- off payment of £90 would be made instead of single payments of £20 a year.
