•- ‘Don’t reduce age of consent’

RIBBLE VALLEY MP Nigel Evans has urged the Home Secretary, Mr JackStraw, to reject pleas to reduce the age of sexual consent for heterosexuals to 14. His comments followed reports in the

national Press on Tuesday that the Gov ernment could soon be considering the

move.Speaking at Westminster, Mr Evans said: "We have one of the highest rates of

teenage pregnancy in the world and to reduce the age of sexual consent to 14 would not only send the wrong signals to young people but would also add to the deterioration of what already is a tragedy

in this country. "I hope that Jack Straw rejects this com

pletely stupid and irresponsible sugges tion.” .
