Listening to views of wardens to fill council-owned properties

AFRICA TOUR : 6th November :

2 Weeks

WORRIED Ribble Valley Borough Council officials have been liaising with war dens from local sheltered housing schemes for the elderly following difficulties in letting some of their prop

erties. Representatives from the

Housing Committee met war dens recently and discussed a wide range of suggestions to get more elderly people to take up vacant council-owned dwellings.

Their views are said to be invalu able, due to their great, detailed knowledge of the various

schemes. A report, to be considered at

tonight's meeting of the Housing Committee, will suggest that councillors "start taking action now to ensure that the council- owned elderly persons' housing schemes remain popular and the difficulties on re-letting homes are reduced." Although there are no major dif

ficulties in letting the homes to the elderly, there have been problems

in finding tenants for some vacant properties. In particular, there are very small waiting lists for bedsit flats at Littlemoor House, in Sab- den, and for first-floor flats at Hodgefield, in Billington. The borough council owns more

the liaison meeting, including the promotion of "value for money" rent and service charges and the extension of social events in the schemes with communal facilities to elderly people living in the area. The provision of gardens and

than 600 dwellings for the elderly throughout the Ribble Valley, including purpose-built flats with communal facilities and bunga lows. Some of the bungalow schemes have a resident warden, while others rely on a visit from a warden who lives nearby. Various ideas were suggested at

parking facilities, as well as improvements to bathrooms and kitchens, could also persuade more people to take up residence at one of the housing schemes. A reloca tion grant could also be offered, along with allowing new tenants to bring "suitable" pets into their new homes.

added: "Despite the bells being 70 years old in August, the installation is fairly modern. They don't need a lot of clean ing and they don't rust at all, so we mainly just check them to see if any

VOLUNTEER drivers are wanted to help with the new Ribble Valley Community Transport Scheme founded by the Clitheroe Trinity Cen

tre. A £22,000 National Lot

tery Charity Board grant has enabled the Activate Project, based at the Trin ity Centre, to buy a minibus in order to carry out its activities during school holidays. Since

then, the trustees have applied for an additional £15,000 from the Rural Development Council to purchase a fully accessible minibus, which could be made available to the local community when not in use by Activate. The aim of the scheme is

initially to hire out the minibus to community groups. The vehicle was ordered in March and is due to arrive in early July. In order to effectively

run the scheme and pro vide transport for groups

who may not have their own drivers, volunteers need to be recruited to be called on when required Each driver will be given minibus driver awareness scheme (MIDAS) training and expenses and will be covered by the Trinity Centre Employers' Liabili ty Insurance. For more information
