Land Rover L

AND Rover’s new Discovery was launched on Tuesday. While many things have changed out of sight, it looks much the

same as the original launched in 1989. This subtle evolution main tains the visual identity of a vehicle which has dominated 4x4 sales in

Britain for most of its life. However, the paint covers are one inno-

¥auxhall to challenge with new Fronteia

Y

EARS after the bubble was sup posed to have burst, 4x4 off-roud-

ers just kccj) on coming. When the original Vauxhall Frontera

was launched in 1991 it had a pretty clear run at the middle of the market, fitting-in neatly between the Suzuki Vitara and the bigger more costly prod ucts like the Mitsubishi Shogun and Land Rover Discovery. Since then manufacturers have bom

barded us with new machines. So the all new Frontera - on sale on October 20 - will have to make its mark in a sector crammed full of American, Japanese and Korean contenders. Progress for off-road enthusiasts

since 1991 has been impressive. The best models now have shift-on-the-fly transfers, comfortable car-like interiors, stylish exteriors and a high level of

creature comforts. Although every panel is new, the lat

est Frontera looks uncannily like that 1991 model. That is deliberate, says Vauxhall, claiming the original car’s appearance was its best-loved feature. It is bigger though, with a longer

wheelbase and wider track, which pro vides more room inside, a less choppy ride and more stable handling for both long and short wheelbase versions. .

The interior has also been given a

much needed revamp. Now the dash board is much tidmr, with switches sen sibly placed in a more flowing facia that smacks less of military roots. One of the biggest improvements is in

noise reduction. The engineers say it is 50 per cent quieter, but the difference is even more pronounced in tandem with the all-new 2.2 litre direct injection turbo diesel engine. The new engine is a real star - quiet,

lively, swift and smooth. I t is a good five miles per gallon more economical

too. I t is joined in the new line-up by a

range topping 3.2 litre V6, an engine which pits the Frontera into competi tion with bigger, more executive off- roaders for the first time. At the same time Vauxhall’s established bigger 4x4, the Monterey, is being phased out, leaving the Frontera V6 as the flagship off-roader for the brand. There is high and low ratio 4x4

depending on the terrain and condi tions and excellent engine braking in the diesel makes it a competent com panion away from the beaten track. Vauxhall is confident in its future

after investing £100 million at Luton to . develop the new Frontera.

vation for the famous maker of 4x4s. There is now extensive use of steel to replace alu minium, notably in the lower part of the body shell and in the door panels. Steel, admits the

most renowned user of aluminium, allows a more sculpted shape, and tighter tolerances. Market research suggests that the majority of cus

tomers will be men aged 40 and over. There is one more big surprise for customers hoping to move into new Dis covery country. The cheapest model is £25,525, which is more than £5,000 dearer than the cheapest of the out going range. Additionally, the dearest new Discovery is now £35,095 compared with £31,490 for the top of the current range. This pricing strategy should maintain healthy second-hand values of the existing model. New Discovery, a five-door vehicle only, is longer and

wider, making more room for passengers in the third row of seats, which now face forward instead of inward. Build quality has been improved, using lessons learnt on the Freelander project. Discovery also adopts the hill

Ecopower from Saab

S AAB has replaced the 2.3 litre naturally aspi rated models in its 9-3 range with a new 2.0

litre Ecopower turbocharged unit providing more refinement and better mid-range performance. The new engine generates 154 bhp and,

because 98 per cent of torque is available at 2,400rpm, it is impressively swift and economi cal. It offers an eight per cent improvement in fuel

consumption. At the same time Saab has increased prices by

0.7 per cent, but has enhanced trim levels. Prices for the 9-3 range start at £16,645 and all models get driver and passenger! airbags, two phase side airbags, interactive front head restraints, anti lock brakes, central locking with deadbolts, electric windows, heat absorbent g|ass, and ^ power sfeeri^^thtelescopicadjustment.'
