New ideas on how to give area vital ambulance cover
THE problems of covering areas such as the Ribble Val ley are acknowledged by Lancashire Ambulance Ser vice - and it is tackling them
with new ideas. "We acknowledge that we will
a lw a y s h a v e d i f f ic u l t ie s in quickly providing an ambulance response to the more rural areas of the county," says the service's
annual report. County Coun. Chris Holtom, a
member of Lancashire and Ribble Valley councils, is a non-executive director of the trust which runs the
service. Members of the team based in
Clitheroe have the same problems as colleagues in the police and fire ser vices - long journeys over sometimes winding roads and, on summer week ends at least, traffic delays. Plans are being made to establish a
reserve of "first responders" to emer gencies from among country people. They will be trained in basic life sup port techniques and the use of auto matic defribrillators for heart attacks. The already existing procedure
where trained staff give advice over the telephone is proving very success- ful.
The service’s major incident plan
has recently been reviewed, with a substantial training programme

THEY are cold, they are damp and they aye hewn out of solid rock - and the almost 400-year-old cells below Clitheroe Library remain a secret to most of its vis
itors. quConstructed, it is believed, between 1606
and 1608, the cells were a key feature of !Glitheroe's first Moot Hall, or courthouse, which.was used for hearings of the various ;courts at that time. Their total bareness belies their important part of the town's
-judicial history. The dungeons were used for the tempo rary accommodation of criminals cn route
to Lancaster Assizes, and arc small, dark, unventilated and without furniture. Today, the cells are used as storage areas
by library staff, but members of the public were recently able to see them courtesy of Clitheroe Civic Society, as part of its her
itage day. Our pictures show (right) library assis
tant Mrs Ruth Hargreaves experiencing one of the library's scary, solitary cells (120998/17/18) and (below) Mrs Harg reaves and former colleague Mrs Fiona Hyatt stand in front of one of the cell walls cut out of the solid limestone on which the library stands (120998/18/20).

ensuring that everyone knows what is expected of them. There is a "team approach" reflecting the number and variety of statutory and voluntary organisations concerned. Continuing improvements to the
