Rail watchdog welcomes


new timetable


A WATCHDOG rail'group has welcomed a new winter train timetable between Clitheroe and Manchester and says it brings several improve­ ments for passengers using the Ribble Valley line. In a Press s ta tem en t, connection then leaves

given by North Western Trains that reliability and punctually will be signifi­ cantly improved," said Mr David Butterworth, secre­ tary of the user group. "This will'surely please


local residents, who have been seriously inconve­ nienced in recent months." The timetable changes


were introduced this week. The train from Clitheroe


which previously arrived in Blackburn at 8.59 a.m., too late for workers to walk to their offices, has been re­ timed. I t now leaves Clitheroe at 8-25 a.m., call­ ing at Whalley (8.31 a.m.), Langho (8.35 a.m.) and Ramsgreave and Wilpshire (8-40 a.m.), arriving in Blackburn a t 8-48 a.m. A


An additional train now


runs from Manchester Vic­ toria at 3-48 p.m., arriving in Clitheroe a t 5 p.m. This train returns from Clitheroe at 5-10 p.m. and provides an opportunity for workers based In Clitheroe and else­ where in the Ribble Valley to return'home.-But this


•additional train will not run between February 22nd and March 28th due to engi­


neering work. Meanwhile, the popular


DalesRail service to and from Carlisle will continue until October 18th and will also run on April 4th and May 2nd. The single train leaves Blackburn a t 9-28 a.m. and Clitheroe at 9-53 a.m., calling at all the Rib­ ble Valley stations. Apart


' from this there is no winter Sunday service on the Rib­ ble Valley line.


Traders need to ‘switch on’ to new retail price regulations


THE use of recommended retail prices on a range of electrical goods has been outlawed this month.


I t is now illegal for suppliers to suggest appropriate


prices for camcorders, cold food storage equipment, dish- washers, hi-fi systems, televisions, tumble dryers, videos

Buildings and Public Protection Sub-Committee, County Coun. Don Yates, said: "The new controls are intended to address supplier practices seen as anti-competitive and give retailers freedom to price products as they choose. "Retailers of such products will no longer be able to coin


pare a selling price with a recommended retail price, and although other forms of price comparisons are open, these need to comply with a code of practice."

Hunt on for malicious caller


CLITHEROE police are helping their colleagues in the town's fire brigade to tra c k down a malicious


mystery caller. The caller, who has been


traced to a public telephone box in Henthorn Road, Clitheroe, has recently sent fire-fighters on a spate of fictious emergencies. Now the police are


appealing for help from local residents. They want information on anyone who has recently been sighted regularly either dialling from or loitering around the
