A SPECIAL drive to promote adult education has involved several Rib
ble Valley personalities. "Sign Up Now" a t Accrington and
Rossendale College has been aimed at over- 163 and incorporates a number of special features, such as two adults from the same family enrolling on the same course for the
price of one. Blackburn Rovers FC first team coach
Derek Fazackerley - who like many of the club’s leading figures lives in the Rihble Valley - took his son James (18) to have a talk to college staff at a special evening at Ribblesdale High School.
And Mrs Buaphat Cryer, who originally
comes from Thailand, and her son Sanay were among 44 people receiving special foundation accreditation certificates to
mark their progress. Winning them is one of the keys to fur
ther college study and also gives confidence to those for whom English is a second lan guage, as is the case for Mrs Cryer and her son, from the well-known Judge Walmesley pub and Thai restautant, in Billington. Mr Fazackerley and James are pictured

Costly Sawley public path inquiry again re-opened
AN inquiry into the future of public access to a contro versial Sawlejripath has been resumed - following
obj ections to the Planning ■ Inspectprate'SdecjsionTo' remove it from* the defini
tive map. Costs for everyone
involved are again racking up and amount to many thousands of pounds. After the lengthy hearing
last year some of the parties involved, including Lan cashire County Council and the Ramblers'Association,
decided to fight on after reading the final repor t made by Department of the Environment Inspector Mr John de Winton. Mr de Winton found in
favour of the landowners' claim th a t the two-and-a- half mile p a th , passing along the banks of the River Ribble through Sawley Lodge and Steep Wood, was not a right of way arid had been entered in error on the definitive map in 1952 - a decision he took "on the bal ance of probability". No new evidence was put forward by either side at the
opening of the new three day inquiry on Tuesday, but both the county council) represented by'Mr Alan -Evans,, and the landowners' representative, Mr Michael Orlik, agreed that the Plan) ning Inspectorate should have taken into considera tion firm findings from after 1952 before making the decision, and invited Mr de Winton to include them in his report this time around. The Ramblers Associa
tion, represented by deputy director Mr
Trevelyan, had argued that no evidence was given last time supporting the modifi cation. Mr Orlik disagreed with these views and similar
John
ones from the British Horse Society and the parish and
town council. He commented: "They do
not seem to grasp th a t a great deal of new evidence was produced, including the maps from 1853 and 1908, which showed only one track at that period. "We have statutory decla
dleway 8 on to bridleway
16." 'juIn--response,iMri Evans said itKat*

indicatirig one' track were quite correct, hut
tliat.there was rio evidential‘basis for
them. He added: "We have to
decide whether there was evidence of a right of way to include i t on the 1952 definitive map, or whether it was added out of conve nience because of the origi nal rights existing.” Mr Trevelyan and Mr
Robert Halstead, a witness for the South Pennine Pack- horse T ru s t , were also expected to speak. The total cost of the pub
lic inquiry to date will prob ably never be known, but last year one party suggest ed th a t the legal bills and officials' time would certain ly amount to £50,000, which could double by the end of this present inquiry. Mr de Winton's up-dated
rations from witnesses who had to tu rn people away and direct them from bri
report and recommenda tions will be submitted to the Secretary of Sta te before a decision is made.
Putting the kettle on for research
A STEAMING success is what Peter and Joyce Jenkinson, of the Caprice Tea Shop, Moor Lane, Clitheroe, are hoping for
tomorrow. The World's Biggest Coffee Morning is . . . .
to take place nationally tomorrow, to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief. An invitation is extended to everyone to join

Sainsbury’s delays opening but already seeks staff
SAINSBURY'S has started advertising vacancies for team leaders at its new Clitheroe store although the opening date has been put back to spring at the
earliest. Clitheroe Jobcentre officers have
been issued 1,000 application forms for the team leader posts which will cover sections ’’across the board" at the new store. People with supervisory experience are being asked to apply. The centre is already receiving 20 to
its own recruitment office in the town over the coming months, when up to 150 predominantly part-time posts at the store will need to be filled. Salaries for the posts have yet to be confirmed, but job centre officers said they would be "comparative to what is currently being paid in the area, if not better." A spokesman for the company said
the delay in completing the building had come about due to unforeseen construction difficulties, hut a store manager would be appointed in the
30 inquiries a day about the vacancies and Sainsbury's is expected to set up
next six to eight weeks. In addition, a community liaison group has been set
up by the company.
Mr Keith Fairclough, job-broking manager a t Clitheroe Jobcentre,
.
thought the development was good news for the Kibble Valley employ ment market. He said:,"Any quality, supermarket coming to the. area, in
addition to the existing qnes, should improve wage and condition trends
within Clitheroe.'’ M r
Mark Walker, the centres newly
appointed business manager, invited anyone, particularly those out of work and not currently claiming benefit, to come and seek advice at the centre.
