Pub horse under starter's orders again by TimProcter
CHARITY fund-rais ing racehorse Swan at Whalley has been given a last chance to pre serve his racing career
by the Jockey Club. Owner Capt. Harry Barlow
successfully appealed to rac ing’s controlling body after
the gelding was automati cally banned following three refusals to go into starting
stalls. Due to the possible problems of
making a personal appearance before the London hearing in the present bomb warning climate, Capt. Barlow was allowed to write a letter supporting the appeal. And it succeeded in win ning a last chance. Now the horse, named after its owner’s pub, the Swan Hotel in
Whalley, is set to run in a big race
at Chester on Thursday. He is nationally known after an appearance on television’s “How Do They Do That” in November, and has raised thousands of pounds for charity. The Derian House children’s hospice at Chor- ley has especially benefited, and the horse is being "leased” out on two racing days as a raffle prize. In his appeal submission, Capt. Barlow suggested that the prob
lem was triggered after a horse ripped its saddle off by going
under the stalls only a short dis tance from Swan at Whalley last
July. He sent the gelding to famous
problem solver Richard Maxwell for five weeks in August, and his fear appeared to have been con quered. But months elapsed, the
horse moved stables and now, wrote Capt. Barlow, “I realise I
should have sent him to Richard Maxwell for a refresher course.” This is now being done, he went
on, and Richard Maxwell believes that he will have no diffi

again. “We would be honoured if you
could please give Swan at Whal ley another chance to race again when he returns from Richard Maxwell and passes his stall test,” concluded the letter. Capt. Barlow told us this week
that he felt the issue had been very fairly dealt with by the Jockey Club. “I am hopeful the horse will be all right at Chester and he will be raising a lot more charity funds,” he said.

Calling foul on local pet patrols
AN angry Clitheroe resident has appealed to pet owners to aban don their “dawn and

Privatisation - of the public loo
FORMER public toilets near Clitheroe’s mar ket development are to be converted into pri vate to ile ts for the use of patrons of the
adjoining cafe. Members of Ribble Valley Borough Council s Plan ning and Development Committee heard that one let ter of objection to the proposal had been received. Councillors heard that the building was being leased
to a new private operator and had undergone quite a lot of restoration work. The applicants wished to fur ther develop the facility by altering the former public conveniences for use privately by the cafe facility, with access via the cafe. New toilets were already available at the entrance to the market from Station Road. A proposal to alter the entrance to the cafe by pro
viding a raised seating area enclosed by a low wall with decorative railings was also approved.
THE Clitheroe woman whose ambition
is to throw the biggest tea party the country has ever seen has moved one stage nearer realising her plan—thanks to a local car dealer’s. The Vauxhall Vantage Garage has told

dusk patrols”. Mrs Barbara Bradshaw, of Bawdlands, says there is a serious problem of dog foul ing in her area, adding: “There are piles of excre ment outside my house every day — it’s disgrace ful.” . She said the culprits were known by other residents as the “dawn and dusk patrols” because of the time of day they exercised their pets. It was difficult to catch them in the act, because they purposely avoided periods when other people were out and about, she explained. Mrs Bradshaw, who approached the Advertiser and Times to help put her message across, declared: “I want to appeal to these people to stop bringing their dogs to Bawdlands or to arm themselves with poop-a-scoops. I know of some dog owners in Clitheroe who already clear up after their own pets and I would like the dawn and dusk patrols visiting Bawd lands to do the same.” She warned that the cul
