N L Y two RibbeisdaleLeague First Division matches survived the weather on Saturday.

Both Clitheroe and Ribblesdale Wanderers saw their sec

ond teams’ matches abandoned while there were winning results for Padiham against Blackburn Northen and Earby against Burnley GSOB. Great Harwood had scored 161-8 before the weather intervened and Clitheroe were unable to get their reply

underway. Richard Palmer scored an unbeaten 63 as Ribblesdale

Wanderers made 156-8. The rain stopped play when the Old Rossendalians had made 29-1 in reply. Whalley seconds managed a much-needed win — only their third of the season — when they took on Burnley

Belvedere in the Second Division. The Burnley side were bowled out for just 80, thanks

mainly to good bowling from A. Hanif (7-22), and only two wickets were lost on the way to Whalley’s win. In the Third Division Ribblesdale Wanderers suffered

defeat at the hands of Baxenden by five wickets while Clitheroe were beaten by Great Harwood. Figures of 5-30 for D. Musson couldn’ t prevent the Chat-

bum Road side falling to a 37-run defeat. Read managed a win over bottom side Burnley Belvedere

after making 120-9 batting first. The Burnley side were then bowled out for 76 to give Read a 44-run win.

to rain with just a couple of overs required to make a game of it. And with Wanderers just frac

tionally behind the Baxenden run-rate, a two-over thrash should have secured the points. Confident

And had the match gone the

distance Wanderers should have been confident of passing the Baxenden score after the start they made. Baxenden b atted f irs t and

managed to post a creditable score of 214-7. The Wanderers attack strug

gled initially as openers Collins (59) and professional Andrew Payne (48) forged a century partnership to get Baxenden off to a great start.

HE dark, damp skies which put paid to much

Ainsworth took the first wick

et, disposing of Payne caught by Britcliffe, and it was Brit c liffe who struck the second blow, trapping R ishton leg before when he had made 19. Wanderers professional

Gurinder Pal Singh eventually took the wicket of Collins, but not before the score had made it to 140. Bushell and Mor time r then

pieced things back together before Graham Monk had Bushell caught fo r 31 by Davies. A series of three run-outs fol

lowed to slow things down with Mortimer the first to go after making 24. Sudworth followed without

scoring and then Jackson went for 13. B y this tim e the score had

passed the 200-mark and Har groves (3 ) and Capstick (1 ) could add just a few more runs before the overs ran out. Wanderers had put 24 on the

board before the first wicket, that of Martin Davies (7), fell

to Bulcock caught by Bushell. Opener John R a in hit f iv e

fours and one six on his way to 33, but saw Simon Duckworth lose his wick et fo r jus t one when he was bowled by Payne. Rain went next when Capstick had him caught by Payne, and

with the score on 49-3 Wander ers were in a little trouble. Singh and Martin Briggs start

ed to turn things round and had taken the score on to 96-3 when the rain intervened. Winning position

Singh had made 29 and Briggs 18 as Wanderers began to put themselves into a winning posi tion. When the game was stopped

they were scoring at a rate of 4.17 an over— just fractionally behind Baxenden’s 4.76. But no further play was possi

ble as the entire field became too wet and the umpires had no option but to call a no-result, giving both sides two points each.

have some good players and a good pitch so we should do well.” T h e tw o C l ith e ro e managers - Denis and

Ga ry Butcher - have been working hard to strengthen the squad that achieved so much for the Shawbridge club last season. Some players have left but others have taken

their place. And with names like Lee Sculpher and Les

Thompson in the squad Clitheroe promise to be a force to be reckoned with.

“ I t ’s important to get o f f to a good start,” said

Denis on the eve of what c ould be an exciting new season. “ The first month of the season can be a hectic

score on 74, and Andy McNicholas, M. Cheeseborough, Razaand Armer were all removed by the locals’ paid man to leave Harwood on 92-6. Clitheroe had 11 overs left to claim

the final four wickets, but profession al Chris Killen and Ashworth stuck around for 21. Killen was bowled by Dewhurst on

22, and Fielding trapped Ashworth leg before on 13 in the next over. Dickinson and Newton looked like

seeing the overs out, but Dewhurst had the latter caught by Fielding off

the final ball of the innings as Har wood ended on 131-9.

Fielding ended with stunning figures

of 6-35 off 22 overs, with Dewhurst taking 3-81 off 23. In reply, skipper Phil Bishop and

Andy Robinson got Clitheroe off to a solid enough start, sharing 39 before

the latter was caught by Armer off Simpson having made 19. Bishop followed eight runs later for

the same score, caught by Killen off Allen, but Fielding and Andy Bums steered their side to 71 off 20 overs, ahead of the run rate. However, no more play was possible

after the storm clouds emptied and Clitheroe were left cursing the weath er as the chance to haul back vital points at the top of the table.
