BLUES HELD TWICE IN LEAGUE ACTION
Clitheroe can
attain mid-table security
THE two hard-earned points the Blues won this week could be vita! to the team’s bid to avoid the relegation dog-fight later in the season.
JUSTIN CONNOLLY reports
The league form this season has been a far-cry from the highs of last year when the Blues finished runners-up. The team haven't been playing as badly as their league posi- tion suggests, but too many games have been drawn and too many lost by the odd goal.
The Blues still have at least two games in hand over their nearest rivals, and maximum points from those games would
,
lift them into mid-table respectability. They start with two home clashes over the Christmas period — first against Prescot Cables on Saturday and then Black pool Rovers on Boxing Day.
Proscot currently lie eighth in the table and go into Satur day’s game on the back of a 2-1 win at Rosscndale United who lie second from bottom.
. Q
Blackpool Rovers lie just one place below the Blues in 18th and provide the sort of opposition Clithcroc should be beat ing at Shawbridge if they arc to stay out of trouble. The problem for Clitheroe is, of course, goals they haven t

been scoring enough of them. Their defensive record this year has been encouraging. 1 hey
have conceded 28 goals in 20 games — only eight more than top side Flixton and 17 less than Blackpool Rovers. But while that side of their game goes according to plan,
only three sides in the league have scored less goals. Co-managers Gary Butcher and Denis Underwood have worked hard to find the right blend to bring the goals. They have tried numerous combinations up front but have
been hit by the injuries to one of their more consistent goalscorers Mark Hcys.
Jon Riley has been finding the back of the net m Cup games, but the side’s good form in the Vase has not been reproduced

The managers have promised more new faces at Shawbridge until the right combination is found. They hnve already brought in cxBurnlcy trainees Andy Law-
son and Anthony McCluskey, both of whom figured in the side which drew at Bootle on Tuesday. A big boost the the club at the moment is the fantastic run of results they have achieved in the FA Vase. They arc now in the last 64 of the competition and must be pleased with yet another home draw in the next round when they will face Willenhall Town on January 13th. Another bumper crowd is anticipated at Shawhridgeand
, IAN RIMMER reports Salford City 2, Clitheroe 2
A BUMPY hard pitch, gale-force winds and a squad severely hit by flu didn’t help the Blues in their search for victory at Salford. But they battled hard and with a little
bit of luck could have collected all three points. In the first half the Blues were kicking
with the wind and they capitalised on that. On 13 minutes Steve Lampkin floated in
box to fire home.
Six minutes later the Blues went further ahead, when Neil Baron powerfully headed home a comer to send the strong Clitheroe
following into raptures.
With 10 minutes to go in the half Salford pulled a goal back when the ball was float ed into the box, the strong wind made it difficult to clear the ball properly and the
ball was smashed home. With only a'minute to go in the half, the
Blues had two opportunities to increase
their lead. Clive Dunn curled a free-kick round the wall but the ball was tipped round the
post. From the resulting comer Lampkin hit a first-time volley, which was cleared off the
line. In the second-half the Blues had to con
tend with a fierce wind which had picked up in strength as the game progressed, but with only eight minutes gone in the half Andy Rouine found himself clear and rac ing towards goal, but his shot was saved by the legs of the keeper.
The Blues coped well with the difficult conditions and continued to press forward
at every opportunity with Andy Dar byshire again proving difficult for the
opposition’s defence to handle.
With 78 minutes on the clock Salford, on one of their rare attacks on goal in the sec ond-half, pulled the score level with a pow erful header at the far-post.

keeping an interest in that competition should help boost confidence for the league programme.
The next two games arc vital, and managers Denis Under wood and Gary Butcher know that six points over the Christ mas period will go a long way to making it a happier New ie onawonu c

all performed very well in what is normally a tough derby encounter at Whal

wind Clitheroe took the lead within ten minutes when Derick Mercer broke clear of the home defence and shot past the advanc ing keeper.
There were times when the wind made it difficult for the Clitheroe keeper Lui Divenuto to clear the ball, which gave Whalley an advantage, but defenders Gary Kay, Damien Burch,
Ridge kept the home attack at bay. The second-half was one

HEAVY rain before the match made the pitch sticky and slippery, but the Blues adapted well and came away from Bucks Park with a well earned
point. The difficult conditions played their
part in this game and restricted both sides in the chances they created. It was the Blues who had the early posses
a a free-kick, which was headed away only to find Andy Darbyshire on the edge of the
sion and on 15 minutes Ian Pilkington found himself free on the edge of the box but his shot was saved by the Bootle keep

Andy Lawson coped well in the midfield and provided some good passes to Andy Taylor and Clive Dunn on both wings - but the Blues failed to turn that possession
into goals. And they paid the price. With only a
minute gone in the second-half the home side caught the Blues napping and a ball which wasn’t cleared properly was swung back into the box and powerfully headed
home. But the Blues refused to be denied at least
a share of the spoils. They battled back and on 72 minutes McCluskey won the ball in midfield and laid an inch-perfect pass to Taylor who cooly slotted the ball past the advancing
keeper. The Blues hung on to earn a valuable
point and get a chance this Saturday to earn three more when they entertain Prescot Cables at Shawbridge. Clitheroe: Mooney, Lampkin, Otley,
