H .A . Reid, of St John’s Church, Read, who became vicar of St John’s in 1979. For the past 39 years he has spo­ ken to many organisations about his life as a clergyman. He told members of his early days in the clergy, doing his house to house visits, and recalled many amusing e- vents, which had members in fits of laughter. He told how parishioners expected an ideal vicar who had to fit many for­ mats.

light bulbs have been stolen from the tree. A similar situa­ tion occurred last year and if losses of this nature continue this might be the last year a tree is erected and decorated. I t is very dispiriting for


the three villagers concerned, one of whom donates and erects the tree, and two who provide their time and effort in installing and dismantling the lights. The continuation of tiie current policy of erecting the tree will be discussed at the next meeting of the parish council in January.
