Whalley Chamber of

Trade and Whalley and District Lions’ Club have-

joined forces for several years now to organise the village’s late-night-Christ- ■

mas shopping bonanza. Stalls were again set out

along both sides o f King Street and village, centre shops were laden with a variety of festive goods.

They did a roaring trade and the Lions crowned the occasion by making a sub stantial profit for charity.

The . night air was filled with merry festive music

from choirs, brass bands and fairground organs and there were balloons, lan terns, and a fire eater to add to the merriment. Festive fare, such as roast . chestnuts, -hot punch, mince pies and coffee were snapped up and the village and Methodist Church

opened their doors for per formances by the visiting bands and choirs.

Two Peelers patrolled

the village just in case high spirits got out o f hand, but the occasion ran like clockwork with no hint ,

of trouble. . The chairman of Whal

ley Chamber o f Trade, Coun. Joyce Ho lgate, summed up the event. “Whalley looked lovely —

stolen during burglaries at two houses in Dutton. Detectives are linking

the burglaries even though they took place on two separate days.

In the first burglary, at a house on Clitheroe Old

Road, thieves stole £6,000- wortK of antiques, includ ing a silver candelarbra and Davenport desk. I t took place on Tuesday evening of last week.

Burglars also raided a

house on Clitheroe Road, stealing around. £19,500- worth of antiques, includ ing a grandfather clock.. They struck between 9-30 a.in. and 2-30. p.m. on Saturday.

DC Dave Haworth, of

Longridge CID, said the value o r property stolen was only an estimated figure due to the nature of the antiques: He added: “ There were similarities between the two burg laries. We are appealing fo r anyone who might have seen something suspicious when travelling along Clitheroe Road contact us.”
