Susan Tilburv certainly will.

1'rn,r archer Susan (33),

o f The Plantation, this ancient sport of kings and

noblemen has helped her

scoop a string of trophies and cups. In just three years as a member o f North York

shire Bowmen in Settle, Susan has crossed hows with some of the nation’s sharpest shooters. Only last month she claimed sil ver in the National Field -Archery Society competi tion in Wctherby. Hut is this sport not a

bit unusual for a mother of two? Archery is so often associated with burly "L it t le John” cha rac te rs "'■essed m Lincoln green. I here is a fallacy that

only big strong men do it. A rch e ry is a good a l l round sport for e v e ry body, no matter what shape or size. Our club has old gentlemen and young c h i ld r en in i t , ”' she explained.

vored the field archery c lu b , w h i c h in v o lv e s shooting at animal targets on boards in wooded areas. As opposed to tar get archery, this takes the discipline one step further into the outdoors, giving competitors the oppor tunity to be tested not just by the ta rget, hut the natural elements.

However, Susan, who

last year became best field archer in Lancashire and ^ orkshire, beat Emma in two regional shoots after the competition, proving the unpredictability of the sport.

Susan is a how hunter,

which means shooting with a how constructed from metal and plastic, but no matter what class, the sport always sticks to a strict code of conduct.

" I t is very disciplined

,\°u really have to stick to the rules, it needs very sensible people," she said.'

There is definitelv no

chance o f going down in the woods and being con fronted by an arrow-wield- mg archer, as the shoots are always cordoned off to ensure maximum safety.

So where did Susan

acquire this urge to do something different? The answer is her father, who

was a champion knife thrower in the Armv.

a different outlook on life than ordinary girls " she explained. "My father took me along to more boyish

brou»?ht up with

ac tivities, football am rufiby, and I had mv owt fishing rod.”

As a youngster, she

used to enjoy throwing darts at a target on the

g a r a g e d o o r , which appears to be where her

sharp-shooting skills have come from. Now she wants to see

more women taking up sports, which are so often

dominated by men, and is even thinking of having a go at fencing.

But surely the unusual

element cannot he the only thing that attracts people to archerv? Susan admit ted that she believes most members secretly harbour thoughts about the world's most famous archer.

' I think e ve rvhod'

secretly has in the hack 0 their mind the thought: ‘ would like to be Robii Hood,’ ” she joked.
