Model patient and inspiration
to her friends
A RESPECTED Clitheroe woman who, dur ing the pas t eight years, had coped coura geously with ill health, has died suddenly in hospital, aged 64.
Mrs Audrey Pickup, of
Lingfield Avenue, was diagnosed as having a tumour eight years ago, following a routine visit to the optician. In the in te rv en in g
years, despite total blind ness in one eye and failing sight in the other, she was an insp ira t ion to her family, friends and staff at
the Preston Royal Hospi t a l , w h e re sh e w a s re g a rd ed as a model patient. She had recently under gone surgery but, having
returned to her home, suf fered a setback and was
re-admitted. She died on Saturday. Mrs Pickup was born in
R ad c l i f fe and won a sought-after scholarship to Bury Grammar School.
She undertook clerical
work on leaving school, prior to various other jobs, including manageress of Hillards’ drinks depart
ment, a f te r moving to Clitheroe. Eventually she retired from Lancaster Hosiery as one of the pro duction clerical assistants. She first met her hus
band, Mr Ron Pickup, when she was 14. After their marriage and family of a son, Alan, and two daughters, Lesley and Christine, the couple came to Clitheroe following Mr Pickup’s appointment as borough treasurer. Mrs Pickup was always
interested in the church and became Brown Owl of the former St Jam e s ’s Church Brownies in Clith- e ro c , prior to joining C l ith e ro e Community Church. She enjoyed knitting,
reading and music and was d e v o t e d t o h e r grandchildren. The funeral takes place
tomorrow at the King’s Centre, Clitheroe, fol lowed by cremation at Burnley.

Birthday reunion for former pupils

former pupils from all o v e r th e n o r th o f England, but also for mer teachers. Arts master Mr Jack
West, who lives in Ilar- rop, and RE and science teacher Mrs Jean Mur ray, who lives in Tos- side, both joined their old p u p i ls fo r the evening. Mrs Lawson, of Slaid-
burn, said: “They were invited to come and everyone remembered t h em wi t h gr e at affection.”
