Sounds familiar? This is 1994 and
good old fashioned tradition seems to be taking a back seat. Earlier this year,
when my daughter announced that she and her fiance are to be married, we sat — and waited. We had a sneaky
suspicion that wedding plans would not involve a country
church, horse-drawn cart, the wedding
march, bridesmaids, in fact the entire British wedding package.
We were right. They Hearts
have set their hearts on a romantic ceremony in
sun-drenched Antigua. So, you may ask,
after the initial motherly disappointment, what’s the problem? Weddings abroad are supposed to be cost effective are they not?
Yes and no. Yes if
the ceremony entails just the bride and
groom travelling to their dream resort. No if, as it quickly became
apparent, the bride and b e a u t if u l ;

again, armed with a stiff drink we sat down and looked at each other.

Booking the wedding

cost effective package and with the number rising to 10,1 thought it would be simpler and cheaper to book direct. I was proved wrong.
Airtours’ company, Going Places, returned the most competitive
quotes and we took the plunge. That was four months
ago and happily, signs ot premature ageing have not yet hit either set of parents and, with
the pounds now firmly committed, our 1995 special holiday in the sun is causing ripples of excitement. By the new year, we are confident they may
become gigantic waves! The dress was the next item on the list.

Manchester was our initial target with, I
thought, more choice. Having spent one of
the hottest days this year trekking from one bridal shop to another, I realised that city bridal stores are not what they were in the ’60s. Staff were obviously
as hot, bothered and cheesed off as we were. Once upon a time, the sight of a mother and daughter, obviously looking in earnest for a not
inexpensive wedding dress, would have evoked help,
enthusiasm and courtesy.
Prizes Not the shops we
visited in Manchester 1994. If prizes were to be given for the exact opposite, all but one would have topped the list. And with tags ot
hundreds of pounds each. I was left
wondering who does select their dress from
unhelpful shops such as these. Back to our local
towns and it was a different story. The small specialist bridal shops were a joy to behold.

many with a vested interest in the shops, suggestions, ideas and patience as dress after dress went on and off the hanger, our ideas
began to take a definite shape. Currently, we are
looking at a follow-up reception for family and friends left at home, not forgetting the two would-have-been

bridesmaids, who are now, thankfully, speaking to the
bride-to-be again! Fever
Ideas are still being
mooted, but wedding fever is definitely now part of our lives. We still have many months to go; the nasty bits —
lots of injections, much planning and saving,
and in 1995 will be able to give anyone
contemplating a similar venture a no holds
barred view of romantic
weddings in the Caribbean.
