Chris is in a regal

position

BROUGHTON racing driver Chris Ward has moved into third place in the National Formula Ford 1000 Championship.

In his “ Centre of the

Kingdom” Mondiale, Chris improved his position after finishing a close second at the recent “Best ol Brit ish” meeting, held at Don-

nington Park. Tile race was stopped

after three laps, following an accident, and when res tarted was restricted to just four laps.

With verv little between

the first 'four drivers, everything depended on

the last lap. The chequered flag was

taken bv Gardner, with Chris just half a length behind and Kinsella in

third place. With the championship

at the halfway stage, Ward is now in third place (43 points), behind Kin sella (52) and Greensall

( S O ) .

To qualify for the

The first competition

1 “ It is fantastic, it is my first win and Swan at Whalley has only been in three races,” Mr Barlow

said. Swan at Whalley not

in prize money. Raced by Mr Gary

Carter, a jockey from Newmarket, the horse easily beat the rest of the field in the race and crossed the line with odds

of 0-1. Mr Barlow bought the

now looks bright for Mr Barlow and his horse, which he hopes to enter in the Totes Supersprint at Redcarr, with a £100,000

fortunate to have a _ win ning horse so early in its career: “ I have just been very lucky to have won after three races.” Asked what goes into

making a prizewinning horse, he said: “ It is hard work on the part of the trainer, but luck on my

part.” Mr Barlow’ s future

plans in the racing game include sharing his lucky streak with Whalley locals. For in September he wants to form a syndi cate of local people and buy a horse to match the success o f Swan at

long-lost friends

AN Austrian woman is trying to trace a Clitheroe couple she first met when a student 30 years ago. In a letter to the “Clith-

couple when she worked in their Accrington public house, the Derby Hotel, in 1967, before they moved to Clitheroe. She then stayed with them in Clith eroe during her university holidays and worked at the town’s Victoria Hotel. The last correspondence
