Cracking crime via hotline

CRIME is being cracked

in the Ribble Valley, thanks to residents using the Crimestoppers hotline. This community crime- busting initiative is going from strength to st-’ ngth, not just in the Ribble Val ley, but in the whole of Lancashire. In the first six months

Owner Mr Gerald Hit

man believes his building team could be the first in the country to include a sculptor among its ranks. Mr Peter Hodgkinson

(29) was recruited to design bronze and stone pieces for the entrances to various buildings and

j eventually for a sculpture park th at is in the

pipeline. “We have almost 60 men

of the year, Crimestoppers received S00 phone calls, resulting in 58 arrests and p r o p e r ty va lu ed at £126,160 being recovered. Dot. Chief Supt Bill

Hacking, head of Lanca shire C1D, said: “ These figures are encouraging, because th ey p ro v e beyond doubt that, with the support of members of the public, offences can be

detected.” However, despite the

high le v e l o f crime detected, only a handful of people have claimed £650 in r e w a r d s

f o r

information. Around *10% of the calls

to the hotline are drug rela ted and offences detected include burglary, robbery, arson, drink

driving and theft. The Crimestoppers_tele

phone line — 0800 55ol_ll __is free and confidential

and calls may be made anonymously.
