told members of the Rib ble Valley Council that vil lagers were worried about the possibility of the agreement for use of the car park behind the Hogs Head not being renewed. The land is cur rently leased as a public car park from Whitbread’s Brew-

potentially a very serious situation with car park ing,” said Coun. Kelly. "The brewery could have us over a barrel. In the
present climate, all busi nesses are having to take a
cold and commercial view.
Coun. Kelly compared
the situation to the diffi culties the Ribble Valley
Council has encountered in the past with the lease of the car park behind the
W h ite Lion Hotel in Clitheroe. "Not only is the car park
close to Whalley's main shopping area, it also adjoins the health centre," she continued. "Part of it is used as the
village taxi rank and forms car parking for the new
village hall. I can't think of any alternative site. When this is negotiated, hope fully the brewery will be reminded of its obligation
to the community.” Planning and Devel
opment Committee chair man Coun. Stan Thomas replied: "We are all very concerned, because it is a critical site, and we will indeed make the brewery aware of that when we negotiate."
