Water's Edge By Martin James
AUTUMN — what a delightful time to be on the river bank, at the lakeside or on the seashore. It is the time when my thoughts turn to fishing on the coast from a lonely beach or rocky outcrop for whiting. 'Phe conditions I like are when the sea has a slight chop on it, with waves of around six inches and clearing water after a good blow, accompanied by a full moon and frosty weather. Perhaps it is my imagination, but these conditions often prove very good.
from Sheerness round to Dungeness. Closer to home we have Rossall beach and Blackpool pier. Both can offer good sport when conditions are right. The North Wales coast, 1 am told, can be very good. Light tackle with lugworin and herring strip is probably the best way to fish for whiting.
My favourite venues are the Norfolk and Suffolk coastline and the Kent coast Another fish to seek at this time of the year is the bass — probably the best fish
available in saltwater around our coast and certainly the best fighting fish. It is also a fish you can catch by fly fishing and anglers worldwide are realising that
saltwater fly fishing can offer sport far better than in freshwater and all the fish vou catch are wild ones.
Other fish you can catch on fly are pollock, coalfish, mackerel and probably whiting. Give it a try. Pick a nine or 10 weight rod, with a fast sinking

The river Calder over the next few weeks should be good for chub and dace
baits, bread, meat, corn and casters. On the Ribble, it is chub, barbel and pike, the latter having been caught weighing 201bs plus. Baits for chub arc bread, cheese and worms. For barbel, it is meat and worms, with lots of hempseed as feed. For pike, try herrings, mackerel, sardines or eel sections.
The Ure, Swale, Ouse and Nitld in Yorkshire are all very good for chub, dace, oach, perch, pike and barbel. Bread, cheese, worms and wasp grubs are the
baits. Over the past year, I have been smearing my baits, the weights and a pie of feet of line with smelly jelly. I believe it has given me an edge, especially when the water is coloured and the fish are feeding by smell. Give it a try.
