LOCAL young people have been impressing Rotary Club members with their skill and initia tive in this year's Young Inventor of the Year Competition.
Five Rotary Clubs from
the region, including Clitheroe and Ribblesdale, have joined together to run the local heats and the winners were announced at a presentation at Haworth Art Gallery, Accrington.
The competition com
prised technology and craft categories and three winners from the technol
ogy section will now go forward to the district
finals in Preston ill October. They are Greg Pope, of
St Augustine’s RG High Scliooi, who invented a child’s educational sand toy; Andrew Moulden (Ribblesdale High School), who made a refrigerator door alarm; and Nicola Parsons (Rowland High School, who made a Braille sign device for shops to enable the v isu a l ly impaired to identify shops before they enter them and the type of goods on the shelves. Highly commended in
the technology section were: Steven Webb (Clith eroe Royal Grammar School), who invented a
ski retrie val system; Andrew Shuttleworth (St Augustine’s), who made a child's adaptable work bench; and Patricia Jarvis, of Baxenden, who created a s p e c ia l t y p e o f wheelbarrow.
Winners in the craft
section were: Simon Nut- tall (CRGS), who invented a robot arm operated through a computer; Deborah Wareing, of
Accrington, who carved a wooden rocking horse; and Chris Stuttard, also of Accrington, who made a fun bicycle which could be ridden lying down.
The winners of the dis trict finals, which cover an
area from the Scottish bor der to Charley, will be given a £300 prize and go on to the national final. The national prize is
£10,000, which the winner ultimately uses to maufac- ture his or her product.
Mr Trevor Roberts,
vocational chairman for Clitheroe Rotary Club, said he believed the local inventions stood a good chance in the next round. “ It would have to be a- very original and commer cial invention if it wore to beat all ours,” he said.
The inventions will be
on display at the Haworth Art Gallery until the end of July.
