must have been given tile wrong car. Diesels usually come with the attached stigma of being sluggish and sounding like a baby .juggernaut, but this one was quick off the mark ami as quiet as a mouse. From previous experience of diesel-en­


gined cars, I was putting my foot down about two seconds before I wanted to go anywhere, hut the DX behaves like a petroi-driven model. Most impressive. So, absolutely no problems with accel­


eration, which is the big sticking point that stops many people from buying a diesel. Af te r all,' the bonus of extra miles to the gallon is a big one — the I .X does lit! around town, 41 at the motorway limit and f>l> at a constant filimph. The l .X is a t re a t to d r iv e , e ither


around town or on country roads, with good road-holding and excellent insula­ tion from the outside world. The interior is cushy and the instrumentation clear, with plenty of little storage areas for all those odds and sods.

Hut it is on the motorway that this car


is renl lj i at home. A t 70 mph and beyond, you get the feeling that this is


what tile car was born to. tru nd ling merrily along without complaint for mile after mile with the driver in total com­ fort and control. Klectric windows, a decent stereo and


th a t t e r r i f ic S ie r ra dashboard that curves around tile d r iver all add up to


make you feel at home. So what have we got? We have got a


large, family car with splendid perfor­ mance, plush in te r io r and a big boot which consumes about as much fuel as most modern "small cars” . It seems like the best of both worlds,


and would seem to suggest that die­ sel power is set to grow in popularity, especially as diesei was the original unleaded fuel. Of course, the L X turbo-diesel is not


quite as quick as its petrol-driven coun­ terparts in the S ierra range, but unless you’re going drag racing you won’t know' the difference.
