he travelled to North- am p to n ’ s t a rm a c t r a c k . K e e n to improve on the pre vious d ay ’s p e r fo r mance, he claimed a third and fourth place in the two heats and then a fine second in the final. H ow e v e r , o n c e

again his luck ran out in the Grand National and Jo h n sustained a n o th e r p u n c tu re , which ended his race. Collecting a further

27 points and taking his tally for the week end to over 50, John, the defending cham p io n , w a s <|uite pleased. With around three

months of competition le f t , the Rimington farme r commands a massive lead in the championship tab le and is still favoured to retain the title. T h is weekend he

will be on the road again, at Long Raton on Sa tu rd ay and at Kings Lynn and Bos ton on Sunday.

Stuart takes title

COMPETING against a whole host of top golfers from all over the county, Stuart Andrew came up trumps to win the Clitheroe Golf Club Am/Am tournament. S tu a r t , who lives in Simonstone and plays off

scratch, won the Lancashire Witch Trophy by one shot, from Nelson Golf Club member Nick Uttley, who won the best gross morning score. In fine form throughout the day, Stuart shot a 70 in

the morning and then followed it with a 71 in the after noon session, giving him a gross score of Ml. The competition also attracted the president of the

Lancashire Golf Union, Mr Norman F o r re s t , who played with Clitheroe Golf Club captain Alan Seedle. Paul Williams, of Hillside Golf Club, won the best

gross in the afternoon session, after a play-off with Paul Dwyer, another of the Clitheroe scratch golfers.

The Pendle Witch Trophy, for the best nett 18 holes,

was won by Tom Owen and Andrew Child, with 78-0- G9, who both work a t 3M Neotechnic, the sponsors of the competition. Second place went to Philip Walmsley and Ken Man

tle, with John and Andrew Wetton in third place. The team prize was won by Steve Duerdcn, from

Nelson and Clitheroe members P. Dunn, C. Hamer, P. Pedder and A. Reynolds. Our picture shows Stuart receiving his trophy from Mr Alan Seedle, with other players looking on.

SUPERIOR fitness, scrummaging technique and power were the key to Clitheroe’s opening win in this season’s Courage League

programme. This year the league has

been re s t ru c tu r e d and although it contains only six teams, they are playeil both home and away, giv in g am p le s c o p e fo r promotion. Clitheroe retained the

same pack from last week, but there was one change in the three-quarters with Andrew Caunce returning on the wing. C l i th e ro e k icked o f f

As the second half wore

was delighted with her performance. After the Swiss event, she travelled to Germany for

the Donaushingen International tournament, again attracting a host of the world’s top riders. Riding the trusty Mester Mouse, Joanna claimed

second place in the Prix S t George, fifth in the Inter- demiare 1 event and fourth in the music section. Showing great skill and commitment, Joanna per

Sandy challenge for rough riders

THE gruelling Southport Beach Race attracted around 500 competitors, with a big contingent taking part from the Ribble

Valley. Riding both conventional bikes and QUAD

machines, the local riders gave a fine account of themselves. The beach race was held over a three-mile cir

cuit, which included a three-quarter-of-a-mile straight and various man-made berms, obstacles and dunes, all designed to make the racing as diffi cult as possible. Chatburn’s Keith Knowles, fresh from his suc

cess in this year’s NETT Championship, took part on a 500 c.c. Suzuki. Usually at home on a 250 c.c. machine, Keith

was a little apprehensive at first about the bigger machine. However, when the racing began he soon got used to the extra power. “I t was heavier over the jumps, but was a joy to

drive and had so much power,” said Keith, who secured a place in the top five of the QUAD section. Also racing in the QUAD class were Mark Wol-

fenden and Russell Townson, though the latter failed to finish, retiring with a seized engine. The moto-cross section also had a strong local

flavour, with Clitheroe’s Brian Crabtree, Trevor Walker, Paul Grant, Mark Wilson and Bar ry Sykes and Sabden’s Tim Gill all in the thick of the action. This weekend, Keith travels to Basingstoke to

take part in a four-hour endurance race. Teaming up with Reading’s Stuart Walker, the Chatburn man will be competing on a 250 c.c. Suzuki. The busy month continues the weekend after,

with a possible return to Southport lined up for a sand race to be held over a 1,500m oval circuit.
