Outlook
Few people know Lancashire as well as countrygoer and prolific w r i te r RON FREETHY. Now Ron, who has teamed up with his wife MARLENE to write a series of books on the counties of England, pin points 10 of his favourite spots in the Red Rose county.
rivers, or the areas of industrial archaeology which give Lancashire its unique character? Obviously it had to be a combination of the two. We also know that much more remains to be discovered and that Lancashire will continue to surprise and delight us for many more years.

WE WERE delighted when we were asked to write a book about each of our favourite counties. When se sat down to plan Lancashire we found it impossible to cover our favourite places in one volume. The publisher gave us two and we still struggled. The one advantage of two authors is that it allows a lot
the “Discovering” series published by John Donald, of Edinburgh. Beautifully illustrated and containing a wealth of information, they each cost £7-50.
“Inland Lancashire” and “Coastal Lancashire” are in Towneley Hall
During the early 1970’s we lived in a cottage in the grounds of Towneley Hall, whilst assisting with the setting up and running of the Nature Centre. Perhaps we are biased, but Towneley is surely one of the best museums and art galleries in the county with plenty of parking and the added advantage of free entry. The nature trails leading through the extensive woodlands are large enough to support a wide variety of wildlife and Towneley with its stables converted into a cafe is best explored over a whole day. .

Pendle Heritage Centre
nearby Toll House had just been restored and decorated for the occasion. This building is a reminder of the days early in the 19th century when new Turnpike roads were being constructed. These were used to carry the products during the early days of the Industrial Revolution.
Pendleside is one of the most beautiful areas in the whole of England, never mind just Lancashire. The history of the area and its wildlife can be discovered by visiting the Pen dle Heritage centre in Barrowford. Out best memory of the centre was in 1986, when the
The River Lune is one of Lancashire’s best salmon rivers. At Hornby the River Wenning, shown here below the cast le, joins the Lune. The castle, not open to the public, was the home of Lord Monteagle who was popular with Henry VIII because of the part he played in the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Few buildings are more attractively sited than Hornby Castle and there are lovely riverside walks nearby along the banks of both the Wenning and the Lune.
Chipping
All roads around Bowland seem to lead to Chipping, which is not surprising since the word means a market. The vil lage, despite large numbers of visitors, remains unspoiled and St Bartholomew’s church is a real gem. There are a number of hotels serving snacks, cafes and the ice-cream hereabouts takes a lot of beating. Around the village foot- . paths lead out into the Bowland fells and this is great walk ing country.
The badger ;j
Lancashire’s wildlife has been increasing in the last 20 r>' years and badgers are now more common that they used to ,1 be. Although baiting the animals still goes on it has J declined and the badger is one of the most attractive and i exciting of our native animals.

The whole 127'/i mile corridor of the Leeds to Liverpool Canal is a joy to us. Here at Top Locks, near Blackburn, there always seem to be large numbers of pleasure craft ;i and it is a pleasure to see the waterway used. The Straight jj Mile above Burnley is one of the wonders of the canal age, a with other exciting places being the Weavers Triangle at Burnley, Eanam Wharf at Blackburn, Botany Bay near a
