C L ITH E R O E high street traders and other business people have entered a period of recession and financial constraint without parallel for a decade, says M r Chris Wood, president of the local Chamber
of Trade. In his annual report, he
takes stock of the past 12 months and highlights the h a rd t im e s now fa c in g many of his members. He says: “We are unique
as a Chambe r of Trade; our membership is a mix of re ta i le rs , manufactur ers, service companies and professional practitioners. This affords a wide view on the business scene and confirms ou r b elief th a t the la s t y e a r has proved increasingly difficult.

again the Chamber’s con cern over proposals for the old a u c t io n m a r t s i te ,
em p h a s i s in g t h a t th e C h am b e r ’s p o l ic y h a s always been for a “small” number of specialist retail units. “The published propos
als suggest 19 retail out le ts and we co n tin u e to lobby th a t this is ju s t too many in th e c o n te x t of Clitheroe,” he added. But in his report, pre
sented a t the 07th annual m e e t in g y e s te rd a y , Mr Wood points out th a t the year has not been without its highspots, notably the ex p e r im en ta l C hr istm a s sho p p in g sp e c ia l, which included Sunday opening for the first time. “This was a success and
convinced us th a t we had the mechanisms to a t tra c t tile retail public to Clith eroe,” he says. “We shall be running o th e r promo t io n d a y s on s e le c te d Saturdays during the com ing y e a r .” O th e r hig h lig h ts have
in c lu d e d th e T e le th o n charity fund-raising event staged by the Chamber’s Promotions Committee. I t w a s th e b ig g e s t in th e N o r th W e s t and ra ised £10,000 for th e region’s charities. “Once again, th e sum
m e r b u n t in g m ad e th e tow n a t t r a c t iv e in th e w a rm e r months and our now legendary Christmas lights a t t ra c te d comment and envy.” Mr Wood ad d ed : “We
