“ I am not going to be an MP who sits
on his backside on the benches at West minster. David Waddington didn’t — he did got himself about,” declared Mr Carr, when I spoke to him m Chtheroe on Saturday.
“ Being the Kibble Valley Member of
Parliament won’t change me. I won’t be putting on any airs and graces. Pm not a bit interested in expensive tastes. I find
• i t tremendously satisfying that at last I am able to represent the area I grew up in. I have lived in the constituency for most of my life, although I am just out side i t now.”
Our new MP is a down-to-earth indi-
' vidual, unassuming, unpretentious and on Saturday afternoon still radiating the satisfaction of winning a seat which
! many prophesied would never leave the Conservative fold.
: Born in Preston, M r Carr had his interest in politics awakened by the Cuban missile crisis of 10G2.
• His own political heroes include Presi dent Kennedy, Winston Churchill and
. Joe Grimond — the la t te r , he says, “seemed such a gentleman and a really good constituency MP.” He attended the Margaret Macmillan
• Memorial College of Education, at Brad ford, where he met his first wife, Janet. The couple moved to Sabden in 1975, but sadly four years later Janet died
. from cancer at the age of 27, leaving a two-year-old son, Edward. I t was a traumatic time and, says Mr Carr, caused him to rethink everything
, about his life and “ realise the important things are not material wealth or suc cess, but relationships with other human beings.” Shortly after his marriage to Geor
gina, the family left Sabden for Bacup, where he had taken a teaching post. “ I was cutting down travelling costs
and moving nearer the job,” he explains. He recalls voting Liberal in his first
General Election in 1970, adding that he ,has always been in favour of proportional representation, even as a Conservative. I t was during his time in Sabden that
he joined and later became chairman of the village Conservatives. He had two
'spells on the parish council, one before his wife was taken i ll and another in 1979.
In 1981, he resigned from the party because of his growing dissatisfaction
• with national policies and joined the then new Social Democrats. A teacher, he works with Lancashire
County Council’s school support teams, a service set up to deal with disruptive
• behaviour. During the election run-up lie has
taken leave of absence but, questioned about his future, said he would be discus-
. • sing i t with the authority this week. Asked whether, in the event of an
early General Election and a swing back
, to the Tories, he would be asking his , Labour opponent, County Coun. Mrs Josie Farrington, for his job back, Mr Carr laughed and replied: “ Work to retain this seat starts now. The Conser vatives have really been unchallenged. I hope this is the beginning.” The Liberal Democrats are already
looking for a suitable base in the area. As soon as one is identified, a regular pattern of surgeries will begin, but Mr Carr emphasises that he intends to be “out and about” in the constituency. “ I t ’s very important to keep people
informed and to keep myself informed about people. Our news sheet “ Focus”
, will become a regular part of Ribble Val- ley life.
! “ I want to represent everyone in the
constituency, irrespective of how they voted. They have not been represented in the House of Commons since David
; Waddington went to the House of Lords. We have to demonstrate that our party and the policies we have do have rele vance to people in areas like this.”

new MP talks to chief reporter Vivien Meath
Mr Carr added that constituents were
going to see a lot of evidence of Liberal Democrats m action, working with and for the people, which he hoped would convince those who may still have doubts ab o ut th e p ow e r o f th e L ib e ra l Democrats. In the coming months, the Ribble Val ley is likely to see growing evidence of
the party’s presence. A Ribble Valley Young Liberal Demo
crats’ branch is about to be started and, says Mr Carr, “Our number one priority is to get stuck into the local elections. We will be fielding as many candidates as possible and work has already begun on analysing the canvass returns.” His seven children, Edward (LI) ,
Alexandra (9), Ben (8), Joe (7), Ailsa (5), Frances (2) and seven-month-old Dominic were not at Thursday’s count but, says their father, the older ones had
taken an active interest. “They have been excited by seeing me
on television and are quite used to me being out of the house through my acti vities with the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers. The older ones have been fold ing and delivering leaflets.” F o llow in g T hu rsd a y ’s count, he
described the feeling when he saw his votes piling up as “ fantastic." “ Don’t forget, I have been at the same
count and watched the Conservatives’ votes piling up on two occasions.” Celebrations following his success car
ried on until G a.m. and rumours were rife that the champagne flowing among party workers had been purchased after the count in a job lot from disgruntled Tories. Mr Carr took up his seat on Tuesday
and says that, for the moment, he will be using the National Liberal Club as his London base. “ I would like to live in the constitu
ency i f I could sell my own house, but i t ’s not easy at the moment with interest rates as they are.” His mother lives within the constitu
ency, albeit at the Fulwood end. Asked about key issues, he said there
were lots of them. “The poll tax was obviously the major
national issue. 1 sincerely think that if the Government does not take notice of
what the Ribble Valley has said, i t is in dead trouble.” Mr Carr added that his party’s canvass
had uncovered many things, worrying individuals. “ I have had someone into the office
already who is homeless. That is one of the problems 1 will be paying attention to. There is a real problem with housing for young people in this constituency, which is quite serious." He confirmed that he will be taking up
the matter of residents in the Ribble Valley whose names were missed off the electoral register, initially with the bor ough solicitor. He is also keen to see the development
of rail transport and to pursue the Liberal Democrats’ campaign to move vehicles from the road via a .metro
system. The survey carried out by his party on
the auction mart will, he says, be avail able shortly and given to Ribble Valley Borough Council. The results, say Mr Carr, bear out much of what the Cham ber of Trade has already said. During Thursday and Friday, he man
aged to grab just 20 minutes’ sleep. A hectic weekend followed, but on Satur day night he managed to put time aside to take his wife out for a meal at a Clith-
eroe restaurant. Then, on Monday, Mr Carr was due to
make a “ star” appearance on the Terry Wogan Show, but failed to make i t because of a train delay — and it was fingers crossed that he would be in the TV hot seat last night.

leader M r Paddy Ash down, who heard the result in London, paid a flying v is it to go walka bout in Clitheroe centre with Ribble Valley’s new MP on Friday morning.
They must have been
two of the country’s hap piest men!
“ I promised Mike i f he
won I would come up h e re , ” said the p a r ty leader, holding a mug of coffee amidst the post
election debris in the tern--
porary Wellgate HQ. Admitting “ I stayed up
to watch TV like everyone else,” Mr Ashdown was in bed at his London fiat on Friday by 3 a.m., but up at G a.m. to make the jour ney north. “We are tremendously
proud of Mike and we hope the people of Ribble Val ley are too,” he said. “ He is a local lad and he
can best represent their views. He has grown in stature throughout the
campaign and he will make a f irs t class Member of Parliament.”
As he departed for Lon
don, after a brief but busy tw o -h o u r s to p — h is fourth visit to the Ribble Valley — Mr Ashdown’s p a r t in g w o rds to the “ Advertiser and Times” were: “ I w ill come back here with my wife for a holiday. There’s only one person with a more beau tiful constituency in Br it ain — and that’s me!”

CLITHEROE Mountain eering Club proved itself to be nothing i f not versa tile when five members descended Tatham Wife Hole on the flanks of lng- leborough on Sunday. Tatham Wife Hole is one

The entrance is high on the limestone bench behind White Scar C a v e a n d th e c a v e descends steeply to two pitches in close succession. These were rigged with ladders by leader Er ic Mansfield, who then life- lined Neil Whalley, Mike and Paula Carter and John Barrett. The th ird and fourth
pitches were safely nego tiated and, after walking and crawling along th b la c k -w a l le d passage towards the final sump, the p a r ty retraced its route back to the surface. A l l agreed i t was a
excellent, although quite demanding, trip. As one of th e p a r ty re m ark e ’ “ Potholing can give you pains where you never thought you could hurt!’ The club’s next indoor
meeting will be held on Thursday, at Clitheroe Cricket Club, when Ian Johnston, of Blackpool will give an illustrated lec ture about ski-mountain coring in the Alps. The next outdoor meet
will be a visit to the Skid- daw area on March 2-lth and further details can be obtained from the outdoor secretary on Clitheroe 270-1-1.
