started as a 16-year-old police cadet at Seaforth, near Liverpool. In 1973 he became a sergeant in the Accrington prosecutions d epa r tmen t at a time when the police prose cuted in the coiirts.
Promotion to patrol
inspector followed in 1983, when he moved to Bum- ley. Most of his career has been in East Lancashire, apart from a spell at Lan cashire police headquar ters at Hutton with the re se a rch and planning department.
Much of his work there
was concerned with the implementation of the.tape recording of interviews and looking at the possibil ity of providing helicopter support for the county force. This airborne sup port idea was approved by the county council, but the project was cancelled at

the last minute through lack of money.
He was promoted to
chief inspector in April, 1990, and returned to East Lancashire, where he was working in the Divisional Support Unit at Colne, before taking responsibil ity for Clitheroe Sub-Divi sion, which includes Padi- h am , G i s b u r n an'd Barnoldswick.
His wife, B e v e r le y ,
teaches children with spe cial needs at a tutorial centre in Rishton. The couple have a son and a daughter, both 22. Chris topher works for the Hali fax Building Society and
Kathryn attends a training centre in Accrington. Chief Insp. Whittaker's
parents', Isaac and Dilys, live in Rimington, where they used to run the sub post office. Isaac was a former policeman until his retirement 27 years ago. Away from work, Chief
Insp. Whittaker enjoys walking in the Ribble Val ley ana spending time at home in Accrington with his family. The second-in-command
of Clitheroe police sub-di- vision, Chief Insp. Peter Rawstrone, has been pro moted to superintendent and is now responsible for Nelson and Colne.

outright winners in the competition to make a bed and wash a patient. They
received a shield and medals for their

The competition was at the St John
heudquarters in Accrington. The girls, who are both aged 10, train at the King Lane HQ in Clitheroe. Commissioner Lionel Harris, who presented the
awards, summarised their efforts in one word . . . “brilliant.” Both girls live in Clitheroe, Joanna in Alma

just part of the £300 handed out to local charities by the dub.
