Extension plans for hotel come under attack
PLANS to add 24 bedrooms and a leisure club to a Billington hotel were criticised by Ribble Valley councillors.
Members of the Plan
ning and Development Committee decided to defer a decision on the application for the Fox- field s Ho tel, Whalley Road, a f te r councillors expressed concern.
The parish council had
objected, stating that the present building was felt to be “a blot on the land scape" and “any further development on the site would only increase the first mistake.”
Nearby residents have
expressed fears about the impact of further devel opment on the drainage system.
Councillors heard that
the application was for a bedroom extension, a sin gle-storey swimming pool
and further function room facilities on the site.
Conn. Bill Fleming (Bil
lington) recalled how the building began as a small cafe, which was extended in su i ta b le m a te r ia ls . “Now we have one exten sion after another and the materials would be more appropriate in Morocco. This is on one of the' most scenic routes in the Ribble Valley, Whalley Old Road. We have a policy to sup port tourism, but 1 am co n ce rn ed about th is extension."
Conn. Fleming success
fully moved that the appli cation be deferred for eon-
s u 11 a t i on w i t h th e applicants in order to gain a s u i ta b le d e g r e e of screening.

THERE was a strong rural atmosphere at the Ribble Valley Mayoress’s “At Home,” for farmer’s wife Mrs Sheila Kay decided to hold her big social event of the year on home territory. Neighbours, friends
and parish councillors from the Hurst Green area were among the 110 guests who attended the “At Home,” held at the Shircburn Arms in the village. “I wanted to hold the
event in my own area so th at th at it would he close at hand for guests from my own commu n i ty ,” said Mrs Kay,
whose husband, Allan, rep re s e n ts A ig h ton , Bailey and Chaiglcy on th e R ib b l e V a l l e y Council. It was a happy occa
sion all round as villag ers mingled with civic guests and dignitaries from as far afield as Lancaster and I ’cndle. Mrs Kay, who lives in Chaiglcy, and Deputy M ay o re ss Mrs R u th Workman, o f Mcllor, welcomed the guests. . The speaker was Mr G e o rg e D o b so n , o f Wrea Green,' oh the subject of village life. Music was provided by organist Mr Jim Broad- bent, who is a salesman

YOUNG film makers at Bowland County High School have scooped up a regional award and are now in the running for a
national “Oscar.” Pupils heard the good
news on Tuesday and are now preparing for a Hol- lywood-style date with Royalty as part of their success in the regional heat. A nine-strong team
will represent the school at the gala final of the F o c u s a n d M u l t i - Broadcast National Schools’ Video Contest in London a week tomorrow, when the national winner will be announced. Bight finalists,
including the Bowland video film makers, will meet Prince Edward, who will present the award to the top team. A magnificent
film-making kit, including video camera and editing equipment, awaits the winning team, which will be announced on the night.
Film-making pupils in line for an ‘Oscar’
been awarded a television and video recorder for winning the regional heat with “I t ’s Grand in Grindleton,” a comedy about a holiday camp, filmed at the school in the summer term. The competition
Bowland has already organisers arc planning
to visit the school soon to present these prizes.
' Bowland pupils, led by head of English Mrs Maureen Olszewska, entered a humorous seven-minute documentary based on a fictitious holiday camp and even produced an
Alan Whicker lookalike to do the commentary and interview. The production team comprised pupils from
> various forms and the cast and extras involved some 40 youngsters. School press officer Mr
Kim Croydon said: “We are absolutely delighted
that we have reached the finals and obviously excitement is mounting
as the big day approaches. “All the work and
ideas have come from the pupils themselves. They thought that the school, with its rural setting, would be ideal for the holiday camp theme, so it must have been the comedy angle that appealed to the judges.”

THEItE was a close shave for two intrepid Kibble Valley Council officers when they gave their col leagues a practical lesson in fund-raising. Beards were shaved off as Mr Paul McNeall, build
ing maintenance manager, and assistant manager Mr Tom Marsh took to the “barber’s chair” to raise £200 for the Mayor’s Charity Fund.
, The “barbers” were Mrs Linda Robinson, of the
Housing Department, and Mrs Doreen Collinson, the • town hall keeper, who caused a few chuckles when they admitted they were complete novices at the job. Tlie two ladies went to work on the beards during a
barber’s shop mock-up in the council office canteen, after winning a lottery which offered the job as
the prize. The bearded pair had organised the lottery for
their colleagues and many of them bought tickets in the hope of winning the shaving treat. Most of them turned up to watch the winners go to work on the fuzz. . . but there were a few important condi tions attached to their treat. “They were not allowed cut-throat razors,” said Mr
McNeall. “Only scissors and extra safety razors were permitted, but even so we felt very brave about
the matter.” Mr McNeall had sported a beard for 13 years and
Mr Marsh had had one for eight. The idea to go for a clean shave came after Mr
Marsh decided to shave off his moustache. “He said lie felt like getting rid of his beard as well and asked me to do the same,” said Mr McNeall. “But then we decided if we were going to take such a drastic step after all these years we should do it for charity — and what better cause than the Mayor’s Fund.” Our picture shows Mr McNeall (left) with Mr
Marsh trying their hand at doing their own shaving after the charity stunt.
