place and, more importantly, had got past main rival and last year’s winner, Patrick Tauziac, also driving a Mitsubishi Galant VR-4. Now heading the field, the paid led for the
remaining four days, putting more and more time between themselves and the chasing pack, which was
steadily being reduced as the rally went on. Said John: “Although the weather was not as hot as
it can be and the conditions were at least bearable, the
tracks were terrible." Avoiding all trouble, they arrived at the start-finish
spot in Abidjan with a massive two-hour lead over the
second-place team. This was a superb achievement for Shinozuka, who
became first Japanese driver in history to win a world championship event, in any form of motor sport. Although the rally went well for the victors, the rest of the pack did not have such a smooth ride and of the
57 starters, only nine managed to finish. Preparation proved to be the difference in the end,
with the Mitsubishi works team benefiting from a detailed and thorough build-up, which started a month
before the event. The team ironed out all the problems and made sure
the back-up tracks knew the route long before the start and John flew out in early October for two week’s of intensive practice. With a fine second place in this year’s Indonesia Rally, he was also able to call on that experience while
racing. As well as the trophy, champagne and glory, the
pair were also celebrating Kenjiro’s new A grading, which now means that the Eastern driver can start
further up the field in future events. He had been a B category driver, which meant he
had to s ta r t rallies further down the field, but for the next three years he will have an A grading, which classifies him as one of the top drivers in the world. After a busy season, the West Bradford man is now
looking forward to a welcome rest, but will get back to action next March, when he again teams up with Kenjiro for the Kenya Safari Rally.
