trees.Following the downward path to the side of the stream is the rock garden and a waterside garden planted with Asiatic and Candellabra primulas. Nearby is a fine collec­ tion of giant conifers,


planted around'1875 and now exceeding 100ft in height. Among them are Wellingtonias, Giant red­ woods, Western Hemlock and Douglas Firs. Returning towards the


house, one is treated to a massive display of Rhoden- drons and Azaleas, many of which have been raised at Bodnant. Also featured in this area are some fine spe- ciimans of Davidia, (or pocket-handkerchief tree),


some Embothrium (or Mexi­ can fire bush) bearing thorn- sands of orange fuchsia-like flowers, and Pieris (Flame of the Forest) bearing, at this time of year, masses of bright red foliage. Before leaving the gar­ dens, if you go towards the


end of May, look for the famous Laburnum Arch. This is a long, curved walk with Laburnum vossii trained over a frame to form a tunnel of hanging golden
