well-drained, faces south and is sheltered from cold winds — which would oth erwise destroy the earlier blooms — and has a back ground of yew and beech
trees.Following the downward path to the side of the stream is the rock garden and a waterside garden planted with Asiatic and Candellabra primulas. Nearby is a fine collec tion of giant conifers,
planted around'1875 and now exceeding 100ft in height. Among them are Wellingtonias, Giant red woods, Western Hemlock and Douglas Firs. Returning towards the
house, one is treated to a massive display of Rhoden- drons and Azaleas, many of which have been raised at Bodnant. Also featured in this area are some fine spe- ciimans of Davidia, (or pocket-handkerchief tree),
some Embothrium (or Mexi can fire bush) bearing thorn- sands of orange fuchsia-like flowers, and Pieris (Flame of the Forest) bearing, at this time of year, masses of bright red foliage. Before leaving the gar dens, if you go towards the
end of May, look for the famous Laburnum Arch. This is a long, curved walk with Laburnum vossii trained over a frame to form a tunnel of hanging golden
