C R A F T SM AN Furni ture first saw the light of day in 1982 manu facturing kitchens to compete with the qual
ity German market. The company developed
within the Clock Tower Mill p rem ise s in B u rn le y , expanding to some £1
turnover and employing around 19 people. . On A p ril 7th, 1987,
disaster struck when a massive, fire completely destroyed the premises. From this disaster the
company quickly re-estab lished itself at the Summit Works in M a n ch e s te r Road, having had to rewire and install an extraction system and fully re:equip the 25,00Csq ft. machine shop at a cost of some
/2m.
•E’/tm. Everybody who had an
order placed with the com pany waited for delivery with the first kitchen being installed only six weeks from taking over the new factory. Meanwhile, throughout
this traumatic period, the company was involved in the TV programme "Fly ing Start" coming runners- up in the area finals. From this “ new start"
the company has since changed its name to Mills and Scott Hand-Made Interiors, reflecting the fact that now the company not only produces kitchen fur niture but hand-painted bedroom furniture and bathroom furniture. Even the kitchen furniture has changed quite radically.

%/ Most kitchens are now
being manufactured with the doors and drawers fixed inside a wooden frame using traditional brass butt hinges. All drawers today are
made from solid timber with dovetailed joints set on metal runners. All exposed ends are
made from planked timber and even some of .the interiors are made from timber to match the fronts. The timbers used are oak, old pine, ash and mahog any, as well as the hand- painted finishes. Adrian Scott, one of the
partners, usually travels to the timber yards to select the logs required. T u rn o v e r to d a y is '

just'involve the' manufac turing but also the instal lation, where the compan- y employs its own fitters; the tiling where it uses Casa Ceramica, of Pres ton, who supply handmade tiles; and the interior- design work where wall papers, fabrics and cur tains etc., are supplied by F in is h in g T o u c h , of Preston. Some of the work under
taken recently has been commissions to design and manufacture furniture for most rooms in a house or converted barn. Ro oms su ch as the
study, incorporating com puter? work-stations, have been .designed, as well ?as lounges; cloakrooms and even free-standing furni ture for bedrooms and bathrooms:and "unfitted" kitchen furniture. A recent commission
included the hand-making of an oak bar in a client's games room which fea tured etched mirrors in the back bar, a fridge, and even the old-fashioned beer pump.

further expansion of the showroom to include bath furniture etc., along with ah exclusive range of sanitary
ware. The company feels that
the niche in the market that it has developed — being able to manufacture furni ture of a high quality to in d iv id u a l c u s tom e r designs and finishes — gives the recipe for the perfect choice, the perfect f in i s h , th e p e r f e c t reputation. -, - 'l;
