It . . A . . . jJ .......... 1 Firm to rely on over the years

THE impressive Bawdlands premises must seem a mil lion miles away from what 21-year-old Rufus Carr had in mind when he launched his business hack in 11)28. But at the age of 83 years young, Mr Carr still

maintains a healthy interest in the company and is ils active chairman. The first garage that lie built, at Rimington. mea

sured just 21ft. by 3()ft. and cost Kid. During the second world war, ho struggled on,

working very long hours. Fortunately for the busi ness, all the farmers had to plough their land and so needed tractors, which Mr Carr supplied and serviced. By l!)f>(), he had the Fordson Tractor agency and was

able to build an additional brick building, which was much larger, and acquired Bawdlands Garage, Clith eroe, to expand his business. Gradually, Bawdlands concentrated mostly on Ford ears and Rimington on Land-Rovers and tractors.

It. has not only been a smooth road, for when the

company was on a high note, disaster struck in 1!)73. Fire completely burnt out the Bawdlands garage and insurance only covered about a third of the total loss. Some £50,000 worth of damage was done and for a time a caravan had to he used on the forecourt for petrol sales. However, the Carr family decided to try and build

up the business again and in 1078 a new MoT bay was built and equipped. In the following year, new offices were erected over the existing showroom and the workshop was extended. The new showroom was officially opened eight years

ago, lint its history stretches back into the nineteenth century. It was used as early as 1S70 by Thomas Stin ger for the manufacture of horse-drawn carriages, while the new showroom previously housed Hmilker’s plumbing firm, founded at a similar date.
