extremely impressed fol lowing his involvement with young people at one of the schools taking part in the scheme. -The group had achieved

THE campaign against drink driving will con tinue to be a top priority for the police, the annual Ribble Valley licensing session heard

this week. . This was stated by Chief

Supt. Allan Williams in his report to the Bench, at Clitheroe, on drink-related offences and licensing matters for 1988. He said there had been

63 convictions for drink driving during the year in the Ribble Valley, com pared with 60 in 1987. The campaign was an

on-going one, not just for* Christmas and the New

Year, he said. However, he felt that

the campaign had still to make greater “ inroads” into the problem. “The message from the police is do not drink and drive, for it causes not only serious injury for drivers, but also death to innocent mem bers of the public.” Reporting on the exten

sion of licensing hours in August, the chief superin tendent said that it had not brought a noticeable increase in offences of

had it affected the way premises had been con-

ducted, which "generally

were well run.” But he added a caution

ary note, saying that it was difficult to accurately assess the effect of the extension of hours in so short a time. He also pointed out that

only a small number of licensees were operating extra hours and the rea sons varied from financial implications to the needs of the locality. Use of the extended hours had been noticeable towards the weekends and over holiday periods. During the year, 25 males, including seven

juveniles, and five females were convicted for drunk enness, compared with 21 males and no females in 1987. The most regretta ble aspect, he said, con- c e r n e d th e s e v e n

juveniles. Chief Supt. Williams

pointed out that police

"drunkenness "and other officers _ had made 7<)0 anti-social behaviour, nor visits to licensed premises

during 1988, compared with 551 the year before. During such visits, his officers warned licensees of their responsiblity to ensure that under-age drinking did not occur and that other licensing laws

were upheld. He reported a “ small

lagainst members of the public and four against police officers. The corre sponding figures for the previous year had been 16

and one. “ In this kind of case one

New hotel at Mitton opening shortly

THE new £400,000 hotel and public house at his t o r ic M it ton Hall is expected to open its doors later this month with its sights firmly set on the tourist industry. Cl ithe ro e licensing

magistrates on Monday heard that the 13-bedroom extension was now com plete and that the owners w e r e h o p in g f o r a February 21st opening. The extension includes a

ground floor bar lounge with food bar and is owned by the Old Stonehouse Eating Establishment, which already runs a res ' taurant at the hall. A year ago the owners

successfully aprroved for the provisional grant of a fUll pub on-licence for the hotel and on Monday had the licence declared final, subject to a satisfactory i n s p e c t i o n b y a magistrate. At the previous hearing,

the magistrates heard that it was hoped the hotel would become a magnet for American and German tourists, as well as those' from Britain. Mr Howard McCann, for the company, told the
