It is an extension of a

Said partner Mr John Parker: “The clinic is quite

informal and allows a per son to discuss a problem in a relaxed manner and without obligation.

“We encourage anybody

to call in with their prob lems, no matter how great or small they might be.”

Long record of service to the town

THE solicitors’ practice now conducted at 21 Church Street, Clitheroe, was started by a former town clerk o f the old bor ough o f Clitheroe, John Eastham, in 1853, from premises in York Street, Clitheroe.

The practice was continued by Mr Eastham and his descen

dants at York Street and later John Hargreaves Ramsbottom jo ined the firm. It was then known as Easthams and Ramsbottom.

In the early part o f this century, Mr Ramsbottom moved the

practice to Church Street. In 1945, Mr Ramsbottom took on two new partners and the

firm became known as Ramsbottom, Liddle and Dixon. Later the name was shortened to Ramsbottom and Co., until

the practice was taken over by John Lumley, who had been a

partner in the firm since 1960. On his acquisition, John Lumley changed the name in 1977 to J. L. Lumley and bought the office portion o f the premises.

On October 3rd last year, John Lumley disposed o f his prac

tice and the premises to John Winston Parker and the firm became known as Parker-Lumley. John Lumley remained as a full-time consultant.

The front part o f the premises at 21 Church Street was built

in the early part o f the 19th century. The additional build ing was added to an older building which was erected in 1792. That, in turn, had been added to the original building, which is shown in Lang’s map o f 1766 as belonging to Dr Parkinson. This old part was converted by John Lumley by adding a

further two-storey block to become a private house, where he and his wife now live.

Pat on back for young enterprise

participants

TRIBUTE was paid to participants in the Young Enterprise Scheme by Coun. John Cliff (Lon- gridge) at the Ribble Val ley Council’s Policy and r Resources Committee.

He said he had been

extremely impressed fol lowing his involvement with young people at one of the schools taking part in the scheme. The group had achieved

a target sale of 1,000 brooches in Longridge, which has a population of

just 8,000. Councillors were being

asked to consider giving financial support to the “Livewire Lancashire” ini t ia t iv e — a national scheme encouraging young people to develop ideas for self-employment. Coun. William Bowker

(Chipping) said he would prefer to see any donation channelled in the right direction through the Rib ble Valley Enterprise Agency. “ It could be far more ben e f ic ia l than throwing a small sum of m o n e y th r o u g h o u t Lancashire.” Chief Executive Mr

Michael Jackson was asked to contact the Ribble Val ley Enterprise Agency and point out the committee’s dilemma. “We could give a small donation to ‘Livewire’ if it

comes back into the Ribble Valley,” said Coun. Cliff.
