CLITHEROE Afternoon Tow n sw om en ’ s Guild members en jo y ed an excellent audio-visual pre sentation entitled “King fisher’s reach,” by Mr N. Duerden. His talk and slides

centred on the surround ing countryside, rivers and fells, bird and plant life. There was a very good

a t t e n d a n c e . Mrs J. Roberts was in the chair and the guild’s thanks to Mr D u e r d e n w e r e expressed by Miss 0 . Wolstenholme.

CLITHEROE Royal Grammar School pupils struck silver and bronze with the presenta tion of Duke of Edinburgh Awards. Clitheroe Mayor Coun. Ian Brown presented 57,

awards — 16 silver and 41 bronze. The school has a strong commitment to the award

scheme and headmaster Mr Clive Darley paid trib ute to the dedication of both pupils and staff, who gave many hours to ensure its success. Many of the silver award winners are already

well on the way to achieving gold and Mr Darley said he felt confident they would be off to London to collect their medals before long. Silver awards went to: Nicola Bate, Janet Brooks,

Claire Earnshaw, Clare Heywood, Alison Whitehead, Stephen Bush, Richard Chew, Mark Eastwood,

Michael Frankland, James Plumbridge, James Press-, ley, Ian Seed, Mark Seed, Robert Shorrock, Henry Walmsley and Paul Wilkinson. Bronze awards: Cordelia Beattie, Catherine Black

top, Deborah Bracewell, Joanne Bywood, Saman tha Chambers, Joanne Dugdale, Ruth Hargreaves, Neomy Haworth, Helen Haydock, Beth Hudson, Vic toria Ingham, Louise Kerr, Irene Little, Stephanie Mitchell, Rebecca Murrell, Amy Norcliffe, Sarah Pearson, Katherine Russell, Laura Stephenson, Claire Tattersall, Ian Ainsworth, Tristan .Barnes, Philip Bracewell, Jason Cheung, Andrew Cunliffe, Tom Ellacott, Peter Elliott, Mark Haines, Robert Hargreaves, Gavin Hayman, Colin Lloyd, Owen Marks, James Moss, Renzo Pagliaro, Philip Simpson, Jonathan Smith, Darryl Smith, Andrew Stokes, Robert Whitcombe, Kirk Wood and Craig Madeley.

BRIDGE CLUB

WINNERS of the duplicate game at Clitheroe Bridge Club, on Wednesday, were: NS Mr Atkinson and Mr Garner, Mrs McFarlane and Mrs Bennison; EW Mrs Pickles and Mrs Fazackerley, Mr and Mrs J. Pawlicki. The following hand was

usually played in either five clubs or five no trumps, but^ at one table north had two “blind spots.” At this table the bidding was as follows:

.

1C 4C 5C

s w N E 2S

. -

4 NT 6NT

North somehow thought that south had bid five diamonds in response to the Blackwood inquiry and therefore bid the slam. A heart was led and was won with the jack. The king of clubs was led and was allowed to win, as was the queen, with west and north discarding diamonds. The queen of diamonds was

won with the ace and west returned a heart. Declarer ran the hearts and when west showed out on the third round, east was known to have six hearts and four clubs. When east discarded the king of dia monds, which was played next, he had only started with one diamond and must therefore have two spades. Declarer entered dummy with

the king of spades and then, instead of finessing the 10, played the ace, hoping that east had the doubleton jack (at this stage, the odds are 2-1 against this) and so went light. S dealer, love all.

Bird park dream hatches at last

A CLITHEROE resident’s controversial plan to build an ornamental bird park, children’s farm and aviaries in Cliviger has finally hatched.

It is the culmination of a

dream for bird breeder Mr Paul Thomas — but one which has upset people in the vicinity, including a Burnley councillor who suggested he should find a suitable site in the Ribble Valley.

set Avenue, is convinced the park could become a major tourist attraction and prove o f enormous

educational value to chil dren throughout the North West. He hopes to start work

on the park within weeks and anticipates opening to visitors in Easter 1990. Eventually the family

hopes to build a bungalow on the site, but for the

Agricultural contractor moment Mr Thomas, , his Mr Thomas (38), of Somer- wife Cheryl and children

Stephen and Rachel, will be content to live in a mobile home while the bird park is built.
