ground, home of the show; for the past seven years,' became a colourful place as the crowds turned up armed with raincoats, wellies and brollies, deter mined to enjoy their day in the countryside. Last year people were

basking in the sun, rest ing on the park’s lush slopes. This time the scene was totally diffe rent, but the quality of the show was neverthe less excellent. Show secretary Mr Mal

colm Kenyon said that en tries for the show had in creased by about 10 per cent on previous years. The quality of entries in

attractions to keep the crowds happy, among them displays of agricul tural machinery and the craft of blacksmith Ron Carter, of Trapp Forge, Simonstone. Local lads braved the

weather to be put in the stocks and have sponges filled with muddy water thrown at them — and there was also a trials motor bike competition. Sadly the weather

called a halt to the horse races, the ground being far too soggy, and the kiddies’ inflatable castle was deflated and packed away, the owner explain ing that because of the rain it became a giant paddling pool! However, the smiles on

the faces of local winners brightened things up con

siderably. Well pleased with the

home the trophy for most points in the flower clas ses. Dick Pye again won the cup for most points in pot plants and Stephen Clark collected the award for the best exhibit in the children’s horticultural section.. In the WI classes, Mrs

Maggie Inskip earned her self the cookery trophy and Mrs Liveridge was the winner of the handic rafts cup.

Three children tied for

the trophy for most points in the children’s classes — Nicola Parker, Nicholas Walton and Angela

Bailey. But the happiest win

ners of the day must have been the Chipping YFC Tug of War “A” team. After picking up their awards for winning the show’s competition, they were delighted to learn that they had also been given the “Champion of Champions” Cup, usually presented to a winner in

the cattle classes. The team’s trainer and

chairman of the show, Mr John Stott, of Laund Farm, Chipping, ex plained: “The show com mittee decided to break with tradition this year because of all the work these lads have put into Chipping Young Fanners’ Club and promoting the

village. “They’ve done us proud

THUMBS DOWN

A PROPOSAL for a dwel ling and garage on land off Shireburn Road, West Bradford, has been given

■ the thumbs down by plan ners.

The Ribble Valley

Council’s Development Sub-committee was told that the site was within an area of special land scape, restricting develop ments to those fulfilling an agricultural or other proven local need.

It was also considered

that a successful applica tion might lead to further similar plans. Access to l the site was substandard in terms of width and visi bility at its junction with Shireburn Road.

OUTLINE proposals for the construction of three 1 houses on land to the east and west of Fir Tree House, Downham Road, Chatburn, have been turned down. The Ribble Valley

POOLE — BROUGH

Gisburn painter and de

corator Mr Leonard Poole married Susan Brough at Trinity Methodist Church Clitheroe, on Saturday.

The bridegroom, son of

the late Mr and Mrs G. Poole, lives at Park View, Gisburn, and the bride is the daughter of Mr and Mrs D. Scargill, of Brad ford.

The bride, given away

by her father, wore a mid-length gown of cream georgette, with lace inset and cuffs. Her cream headdress was decorated with lemon orchids and a face veil and she carried a matching silk bouquet of orchids, pale pink roses and gypsophila.

Bridesmaid was Miss

Kirsty Brough, the bride’: daughter, who wore ; blue ballerina-style dress with a lace top and net skirt edged in silk.

Best man was Mr Ian

Brierley, and Jon Brough the bride’s son, was usher.

The ceremony was per

formed by the Rev. J. Needham, and a reception was held at the White Bull, Gisburn.

The couple went to

Blackpool for their honey moon. They are to live at

"P h o t o g r a p h : John Barry, Blackburn.

Park View, Gisburn.

Council’s Development Sub-committee vetoed the applications, for Mr Arkley, because it was of the opinion that the sites in their present form make a significant con tribution to the character and quality of the Chat- burn Conservation Area. Planners received 10

letters of objection from nearby residents who claimed that, if granted, the proposals would create more traffic on an already busy and narrow stretch of road. Additionally, the open

ing up of the front of the sites to Downham Road and the proximity of ex isting dwellings would be intrusive and detrimental, not only to the conserva tion area but also to nearby residents.

B a d n e w s

THE new newsagents in Henthorn Road, Clitheroe, have been re fused planning permission for ,an extension to pro vide an additional bed room at the premises. The Ribble Valley

Council’s Development Sub-committee was told that the application by Mr

J. Earrey was for a first- floor extension above

the existing garage and store-room. The committee felt it

would be visually intru sive and seriously detri mental to the character and visual amenities of the adjoining residential occupier.
