Clitheroe almost let Oldham off the hook

Clitheroe 2, Oldham Dew 1

CLITHEROE can count their blessings that they ended up the winning side when they clashed with Oldham Dew in a North West Counties

League Division Three match at Shawbridge on Saturday lb a

For the home side fol fnl O l i i i .

lowed a magical first half performance with a stink

er in the second. It turned out to be a real

“Jekyl and Hyde” performance. As the first half got under-

n sur-

wav, Clitheroe made a point of letting their lowly-placed oppo nents know that they meant business. Striker John Taylor was

foiled from close range in the third minute and that was fol lowed bv a skilful effort by David Sharpies who received the ball on the edge of the penalty area and seeing the keeper off his line tried to lob

the ball over him. However, the 'keeper, Chris Stanley, who had a good match, back-pedal led and managed to stop the effort. In th e 10th m in u te ,

C l i th e r o e ’ s goal scoring machine David Proos headed just over the cross-bar and the Oldham defence — complete with ex-Manchester City star Alan Oakes, now 40 years old — had to soak up a lot of pressure. This pressure paid off for

i . .

Clitheroe when miafielder Clive Dunn, who had a superb first half, was felled in the penalty box.

John Taylor scored from the

spot and a minute la te r Clitheroe found themselves two up. Proos received the ball and surged for goal, beating the Oldnam defence’s offside trap. Oldham obviously thought ne was a mile offside ana stood waiting for the linesman’s flag. It did not go up and Proos charged towards the ’keeper before slotting it under him and into the back of the net.

CLITHEROE R U FC were well beaten by a dominant set of forwards at Kirkby Lonsdale. The Clitheroe tight five were outplayed in all the scrums, kicks and mauls.

The Kirkby forwards pro- 1 UC AVIIIWJ Wl .. c.

vided such a constant supply of good balls to their backs that they managed to score three of the" four tries conceded, not because they were especially good but they applied such great pressure that scores were

bound to come. Despite the poor scrummag

ing, the line-out play was fairly even, and the back row of Nichols, Robson and Stephen Greatorex played well through

out the game. The Clitheroe backs played

skilfully with the scraps of pos session they received, but they

TH E team performance was a vast improvement o v e r p re v iou s we eks , especially in the backs. This was due mainly to the

at prop the forwards only man aged to produce a limited amount of possession. The play at line-outs was improved though with good tidy work particularly by Martin Byrne. The backs, in contrast to

previous weeks, played well on the muddy surface, thanks to good play by fly-half Alan Rudd. Every time they ran the ball at the opposition they

looked dangerous.

The first try was scored by winger Dave Workman after

good work by the Fielding brothers in the centre. The conversion attempt by Alan Rudd just dipped under the

was again missed. Despite these two fine tries, .

all the three-quarters could have scored more; they made decisive breaks then did not have the speed to score, and were tackled by covenng de-

However, good tackling by the backs and the speed of the lighter home pack, proved enough and when the final whistle went Chtheroe were again attacking.

Whalley will be hoping his team won’t suffer from nerves when they play Daisy Hill at Shawbridge

on Saturday. Eric thought that when

Clitheroe played Oldham on Saturday the players began to

feel a little nervous as they realised the importance of the victory.

He said: “We absolutely cut ,

them to ribbons in the first half and spectators saw some of the best football at Shawbridge for

weeks. “However, we let them back , , ,

into the game in the second half and were lucky to finish off

with both points.” Eric told our reporter that

Prestwich Heys, a Manchester side also in the hunt for promo- tion, dropped a point in a 3-3 draw with Vulcan Newton. And the Clitheroe manager re ckons that if his lads take six points from their last three games — at-home to Daisy Hill on Saturday, away at Ashton Town on the 23rd and finishing the campaign with a game in front of the home fans against Maghull on April 30th — then nobody can stop the Shaw bridge side from moving up.

n« The score remained 2-0 at

half time. As mentioned earlier, Dunn

was the pick of the first half. When vision was needed to set the strikers off in the direction of the goal, he provided it, spraying lovely passes all over

the park. In defence, outstanding were

both skipper Mick Ashcroft and Nigel Whiteside. Up front Ash worth was having a good game and nobody could knock Taylor or Proos for their hard work. However, it was to be a different story in the second

half. The fans at Shawbridge will

never know, but the fact is, Clitheroe allowed the visitors right back into the game and the Shawbridge side found themselves clinging to victory in the last few minutes. Oldham scored what was

their only goal of the # game when in tne 68th minute, striker Stephen Wilkinson nipped in front of three Clitneroe defenders to crack the ball past Denis .Underwood. But for at least 40 of the 45

minutes of the second half, Oldham were on top and with a procession of corners put Denis Underwood’s goal under a lot

of gressure. However, Clitheroe kept

both points and must now keep their heads up for the remain ing games if they wish to taste life in Division Two next

season. Manager E r ic Whalley . „ „ ,,

RIDERS

A T the District Club on Friday, North Lancashire Road Club members ex pressed their wish that more of the membership attend the meetings to bring in . new ideas and vote on the various items which arise in the open

meetings. Club membership is slowly

creeping up as the better weatner comes along and cycl ing as a pastime and a sport is

attractive to families. Over the Easter holidays

daily rides into the countryside have not been stopped by the bad weather. Best ride to date was last Thursday when on a warm sunny day six left Brow- nhill and after a steady climb over Waddington Fell, Tatham Fell was experienced in one of its more gentle moods. Quiet lanes were taken via Caton to Scorton and after refreshment it was only an hours rule

home. It is a pity, especially in view ..............

. of football and its holligamsm, that more parents do not en courage their children to join cycle clubs. A few hours in the saddle not only leaves one with a yearning for sleep but gets rid of any pent-up aggressive

ness. On Saturday afternoon 20

riders enjoyed mild conditions

in a 25-mile time trial for teams of two riders. Wilpshire’s Stan Riley, with workmate A. Crow ley of VC Preston, did a 58- m’inute ride while Rod and Chris Goodfellow just missed fastest mixed team due to a
