peal of bells rang out from St Helen’s Church, Wad­ dington, on Sunday morn­ ing to honour Mr James Herd and his wife Annie. The couple, who live at


Beech Mount, celebrated .their golden wedding last week. Mr Herd has been con­


nected with the bellrin­ gers for 57 years, so his colleagues decided that the golden day merited a surprise peal after morn­ ing service.

Broken-down bus couple together


YESTERDAY had a special golden sparkle for Bolton-by-Bowland couple John and Elizabeth Carman, for they celebrated 50 years of mar­


ried life. They spent the day at


home, saving the special celebrations until Satur­ day. when they can be with their family and close friends at a party at the Copy Nook Hotel.


But even then, Mr and


Mrs Carman, both 77, will not have finished marking the special occasion.


In the summer they


plan to return to their home town of Chester for more celebrations.


They met in 1930 on a


bus ride. When the bus broke down, Mr Caiman, like a true .gentleman, walked the .three miles home with Mrs Caiman, then Miss Hughes.


. They met again and in


1932 were married in Dunham Hill, Chester.

tired from the Force and took up work including storekeeping and driving. The couple have a son,


Ian, who lives in London, and a daughter, Mrs Mar­ garet Lodge, of. Langclif-' fe. There are four grand­ children and four great­ grandchildren. Mr Carman is a keen


naturalist and enjoys gar­ d en in g , w hile Mrs Carman • spends much of her time on pottery paint­ ing and sewing.
