the Rossendale Valley side, Bacup never looked seven goals worse than their opponents. It was Clitheroe’s enterprise

and endeavour which won the game so handsomely not, as in so many such “slaughters,” the inadequacies of the opposition.

.'Bacup should be admired for the way they continued to come forward with purpose even when the game was way out of

reach. Clitheroe took the lead in the

14th minute when John Taylor was brought down in full flight in the penalty area and Ian Ashworth scored from the spot. The winger made it two 20 minutes later, as he nipped in to .score amid confusion in the Bacup defence about how best to clear the ball after a surging run by the busy Drugan. And in the 40th minute, it

was Drugan himself who made it 3-0, slotting the ball into the bottom left hand comer of the net from an acute angle as Bacup ’keeper Gary Stockton ' made a vain attempt to narrow

the angle. The score remained that way

until half-time and Borough came out. after the break with more apparent purpose. They seemed more solid at the back, repeatedly thwarting any early attempts by Clitheroe to add to their tally and Loney, Robinson and the impressive Green all

went close to scoring.

splendid saves. Steve Conti put the finishing

touch to a fine game by scoring after another solo run. The game was played in a good spirit and on a good sur

face. Outstanding for Grindle ton was Ward, with Coulston on good form in the home defence. C h a t b u r n : J o h n s o n ,

Centre-half Simon Holding

also made some very admirable runs forward for the visitors and that policy proved Bacup’s undoing in the 61st minute, when Simon Whiteside broke loose and took advantage of the acres of space, available to score his first of the match. Six minutes later came that

memorable headed goal to make it 5-0 and Whiteside com pleted his hat-trick in the 79th minute as he calmly took a through ball on his chest and turned the ball past Stockton. Ashworth completed ; the

scoring nine minutes from time, again proving successful from the penalty spot after referee Halfpenny haa judged a Bacup defender to be guilty of a hand ling offence. • ’ A heart-warming perform

ance from Clitheroe, with each member of the side playing his part in a victory which will live .in the memory for a long time

to come. A shw o r th , Drugan and

JUST THE TICKET

CLITHEROE manager Eric

Whalley, obviously delighted with Saturday’s^ overwhelming victory, hopes it will be just the boost his side needs to mount a charge up the Lanca shire Combination table. He believes the seven-goal romp was the result of a-reac

earned more. “We should have beaten

Nelson and were worth at least a draw at Harwood, but as it was chances went begging and all we could pick up was a

foalless draw at Nelson,” said

!ric. . “On Saturday, though, ev

erything clicked and we created enough chances to have scored . even more goals than we did. "It was a very satisfying all

New cup for table tennis youngsters

A NEW competition is to be

. run by the Itibblesdale Table Tennis Association in an effort

• to encourage more youngsters to take part in the sport. The association, whose main

object is to promote table tennis within the Ribble Valley and which runs competitive lea gues and competitions, is con cerned that few young people play the game. So president Mr John Aspinall has donated a cup for tne, contest, to be held in April. The. competition is open to

teams of girls and boys consist ing o f ’three players, plus a reserve, between the ages of 12 and 16, playing for a school, youth club or other youth or ganisation in the Ribble Valley. • Games will be played on a

SABDEN scored from virtual ly the first move o f the match with an laii Johnson header. The lead was increased 10 mi nutes later — Fielding scor ing a “ gift” goal when his centre was literally blown

into the net. After 12 minutes a Keys

man was injured in a tackle with Balmbra and had to be taken to hospital with a sus pected broken leg. The delay in waiting for the ambulance was such that, as Keys had no substitute available, it was d e c id e d to a b an don the match.

Ten-man victory

Victoria 2, West Bradford 1 ALTHOUGH Victoria could

field only 10 men, chiefly be cause of some players being injured, they still notched up a good win at West Bradford’s expense.

- Paul Grant, whose signing

was completed just before the start, made a good debut for Victoria and with regular goal

keeper Peter Stirzaker unavail able Graham Tomlinson proved to be a capable substitute. An even first half ended with

neither side having scored but soon after the .restart John

Clegg gave West Bradford the lead. Victoria soon got on terms when Steve Musgrove laid on a corner kick enabling Steve Tomlinson to find the target. • Bill Campbell also netted for the home side only, to have the effort disallowed for offside. However, justice was done when Len Aspinwall headed in Grant’s cross. Men , o f the match were

home and away knock-out basis. Ideally matches will be played, at the venue of the .or ganisation, but if this is not possible the association will provide suitable rooms and tables. The association will appoint

referees for all matches and the final will be played on a neutral

table. After the competition, the association plans to provide

coaching by experienced play ers for youngsters who nave shown promise and potential. I f players o f exceptional
