overnight decision,” said Mr Farquharson. “The girls are growing up and we knew we would either have to extend our pre sent home or move. “ So we thought we

might as well take the plunge and go to Au stralia.” A qualified engineer, Mr Farquharson has no

job lined . up in Australia at the moment, but is con fident of finding one when he arrives. “Perth is apparently

just beginning a five-year boom, with petroleum, diamonds and other such industries providing a g r e a t b o os t for the economy in the western half of Australia, of which Perth is the main centre,”

he explained. Mr Farquharson, a

keen do-it-yourself man who converted the fami ly’s present home from a derelict shell, is not un familiar with Australian

life. His sister Doris has

lived in Perth for the past 34 years and in the late 1950s he spent two-and- a-half years there, working in various parts of the

country. Mrs Farquharson, who

has helped with the 1st St Leonard’s Brownies, will also be looking for em ployment when the family is settled. She has worked part-time at a farm in Langho for a number of years and enjoys the extra interest that a job provides.

Service rewarded

TWENTY-FIVE years as a bus driver with Ribble Motor Services' were re warded for Mr Albert Hargreaves when he was presented with an en graved watch. Mr Hargreaves (59), of R o s e b e r r y C o t ta g e ,

. Grindleton, has now re tired. He received his watch from Mr D. G. F. Rawlinson, northern reg ional director of the Na tional Bus Company and chairman of Ribble.

SAW LEY chef Brenda Howarth— holder of the Grandmet Catering Ser vices’ North West Super chef of the Year t i t l e - failed to make further progress in the national competition at last weeks

divisional final. Mrs ' Howarth ' was up

against five male chefs from the Greater Man chester area and North East region in the Man chester event. Two of the NE chefs qualified for the

national final. But Mrs Howarth, of

“Meadowbank,” Laneside, who has been in catering for some 18 years, was philosophical about her

defeat. “It was a tremendous

experience - and I am not . too disappointed,” she said. “The real losers are those who never entered in the first place.”

The silver plaque which

Mrs Howarth won at the regional final in December will now adorn the can

teen wall for the next 12 months at Shopfitters, Os-

waldtwistle, where she is cook manageress. Mrs Howarth also has

permanent souvenirs of her North West Victory in the form of a gold medal and certificate and is already looking forward to entering the competi tion again next' year.

Visits Mrs Tennant Puts her

feet up A FORMER Hurst Green woman has retired after 21 rewarding years as a chiropodist, in Blackpool. Mrs Anrie Tennant was

born in the village and attended St Joseph’s RC School; her father and a brother used to work at Stonyhurst College.

She lived in Smithy Road until she was mar

ried, when with her hus band John she moved to Clayton-le-Moors. A n o th e r o f her

broth er s, Mr Tommy Hunt, meanwhile moved to C h a tb u rn R oad, Clitheroe, from where he ran a haulage business, before emigrating to New Zealand in 1967. During this time, Mrs

Helsinki WHALLEY ladies’ fash ion shop owner Mrs Mau reen Cookson was among a party of 50 English people invited to the Finnish Fashion Fair in Helsinki.

; The visit to. the fair,

which sp ec ialised in sports, leather, ski and rainwear for the 1982/83 winter season, was spon sored by the Finnish Embassy.

Tennant was working as a nurse, but after moving to Blackpool decided to set up her own surgery for the foot-sore. Most of her relatives now live on the Fylde

coast. Her retirement gives

her more time to concen trate on dancing and walkin g, though she misses her patients. It also means that the couple can make more visits to Hurst Green, which Mrs T en n an t th o ro u gh ly

enjoys. Keen to trace ancestors Sa\e^'ce •fasfL

overseas are, in the main, people who have personal links with the village or district and are all, I sus pect, just a little bit “ homesick” ; emigrants who sailed (or flew) away 50 or 60 years ago and have relatives in this country who mail the paper out to them — but these are by no means all. There was, for instance,

the lady from the US who claimed descent from the De Lacies who came' over with the Conqueror and had such a profound effect on our area some 600 and 700 years ago. A little earlier there

was the American young man. who had flown into Heathrow from the Conti-

Whalley Window

nent that morning and called to see me at three in the' afternoon. He wished to check up on as sociations with Wiswell, from which village, his mother had told him, her family had originated some 300 years previ ously.

When I offered to meet

him the following day to see what help I could give, he said: “Gee, I can’t do that! I promised my Mom I’d check up on these things when I was in Europe and I fly back to the States at mid night.”

So I wasn’t able to give

him much assistance. My most recent corres

pondent lives in Whitby in the South Wirral (I didn’t know there were two Whitbys).

This lady had read

recent correspondence on the future of Mitton Hall' and was interested be cause an ancestor, Ale xander Holt, had bought the hall in • 1664. Alexan

der’s father had been a goldsmith, banker and al derman of the City of London; a sort of Dick Whittington in some re spects, although he came from noble lineage.

In all, four generations

of the Holts were at Mitton. None of them lived to considerable age, and two of them lie buried at Whalley. The property

• th en p a s se d to the Beaumont family.

I hope I have been able

to help my lady corres pondent. I have indicated further areas for research which she has not-previ ously encountered and which may as s is t in finalising her project. I hope she is successful

for, in the final paragraph of her letter she expre sses a thought which will be endorsed by many people in the district. “How on earth,” she

asks, “can anyone dream up a name so ugly as ‘The

Old Stone House’?” I share her bewilder

ment. The name is far from attractive and" dis plays a great lack of im agination. Nonetheless, I hope the

new venture in this old hall prospers- and this

jewel in our Ribble Valley heritage is preserved for many years to come.
