Another washout means revised programme

THE calendar said it was Spring Day but there was no joy for the Ribble Valley Football League with the weather causing a complete abandon ment of Saturday’s programme. The inter-league match

with the North Lanca shire League at Lancaster on Sunday was also put off but should now be played at the weekend.

Arrangements have

been made with Clitheroe FC to play the Ashley Smith final between Sabden and Read United at Shawbridge on Sunday, April 5th, kick-off 2-30 p.m. The dates of the Dan Seed and the Aitken Shield finals, which are also played at Shaw bridge, will be announced soon.

The remaining second

round Aitken Shield game between Catholic Social Centre and Chipping is scheduled for this Satur day along with three quarter-final games. On Wednesday the first

of the midweek matches will be played, kick-off 6- 30 p.m.

Clitheroe were put under severe pressure by the Ashton pack who soon capitalised on their for ward dominance with a pushover try. The restart saw an all

he had started, following some good support play, with a try. However, despite some

excellent kicking from stand-off Martin Emmott the Ashton pack applied the pressure and once again a try resulted. A complete change of

tactics by Clitheroe in the second half contributed to their eventual victory. The ball was fed quickly

into the scrum and by opening up the play on every occasion, despite the conditions, Clitheroe did not allow Ashton to assert their first half dominance. A neat pick up and pass

by captain Andrew Cor- less to centre Robin Lund enabled him to score in the co rn e r . Martin Emmott kicked a superb con v e r s ion to put Clitheroe ahead for the first time. The fitness and commit

ment of the Clitheroe pack, especially in the loose, began to rattle Ashton. • Play was now continual

ly in the Ashton half and with penetrating runs by the, Clitheroe backs, ably supported by the now rampant pack, a further score was inevitable. It came from a ball won

by the pack close to the Ashton line. The ball was picked up by flanker Rupert Able who then smashed his way through several defenders to score. Emmott kicked the con

version to seal the match for Clitheroe, who showed that with similar perform ances this will not be their only win of the season. Clitheroe 2nd XV: D.

Double for ladies' squash teams

EMPRESS Squash Club has cause for a double celebration — both ladies’ teams have won promotion thus setting the seal on' a most satisfying season.

McGUIRE SET TO RETURN

MIDFIELD man Paul McGuire — missing from the Clitheroe side since early last month with a troublesome knee injury — is all set to return for this weekend’s tough double header at Great Harwood on Saturday (3 p.m.) and at home to Caernarfon Town the fol lowing day (2-30 p.m.).

But player-manager Keith

Newton will miss both games because of a prior engagement and injury doubts still hang over Dave Gillibrand and goal keeper Denis Underwood. De fender Phil Mooney is also likely to be unavailable.

Although Mr Newton was

frustrated that last weekend’s matches were washed out it had a brighter side. He thought that* ‘I f Simon Whiteside nad played on a heavy pitch it could have made his groin strain worse. Now he has every chance of being fully fit.”

In a bid to dear the fixture

backlog, the Lancashire Combi nation, this week announced plans to extend the current season by three weeks.

Clitheroe will be among

many clubs playing at least one evening game a week and their midweek campaign gets under way next Tuesday with a visit to Wigan Rovers in the first

round of the Bridge Shield (5- 45 p.m.). Players are asked to meet at

. Shawbridge at 1-45 p.m. on Saturday, 1-30 p.m. on Sunday and 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

The squad for the weekend

is: Underwood, N. Whiteside, Eyles, Richards, Bretherton, Wilcox, McGuire, Gillibrand, Ashcroft, S. Whiteside, Ash worth, Mooney, Waddington, Braithwaite. Tuesday’s line-up will probably be named after Sunday’s game.

Clitheroe Reserves, whose

final choice will hinge on who is fit for the first team, travel to meet Hoghton Reserves in a Blackburn Combination fixture. Players are asked to meet at Shawbridge at 1-15 p.m. for a 2-30 start.

Rain puts paid to Cub

football WEEKEND fixtures in Clitheroe and District Cub Scout Footbal l League wore postponed because of waterlogged pitches. The D istrict team

matches for this weekend have also been cancelled due to a backlog of games in the Preston League. Local league games for

Saturday is Ribblesdale v Waddington (J. Wood- worth). Sunday — Wad dington v Chatburn (M. Booth).

A 5-0 win over Mark-

land Hill gave the first team the Division Three championship of the Lan cashire Ladies’ Squash League. In a significant victory they dropped only two games.

Lying joint second in their

division, Empress 2nd had to win their game with Bamford if they were to be promoted to Division Four. They achieved it by a 4-1 margin.

Jean-Ann Speak won in three

straight games, proving much too strong for the opposition. Marilyn Fletcher made a fine start and, when her opponent rallied, remained constant and held off the challenge. Carrie McDonald, playing out of order, added a further 3-0 win to win the match and promo tion. Sharon Willis outplayed her opponent to win while Sheila Willis lost the final rubber.

Results: Empress — Val

Fielding, Racne! Pallister, Carrie McDonald won 3-1; Yvonne Greenup, Jean Hutch inson won 3-0. Empress 2nd — Marilyn Fletcher won 3-1, Carrie McDonald, Sha'ron Willis, Jean-Ann Speak won 3- 0.

Empress men’s team put up

a good fight before losing 4-1 to a strong Lancaster side. Dennis Greenup made his debut and quickly established a 2-0 lead in the opening match but eventu ally lost 3-2. Glenn Evans also lost 3-2 after another marathon but Conor McLaughlin played a fine match at No. 3 for a 3-1 scoreline and his side’s only win. Ian Warren at No. 2 took His. contest to four games with some determined squash but lost 3-1, and Malcolm Mac donald lost 3-0 to a county player. Empress men's second team

had an important 4-1 home win to sustain their promotion chal lenge. John Willis and Robert Field

ing gave them a flying start and. although Eddie Vidler surprisingly went down 3-2, Brian Hayward and Wayne Townley completed the team win in fine style. In another dramatic match

the thirds again won 3-2. Roger Jackson was man of the match with an important point at No. 4 to give Nigel Willis and Stuart Wardle the chance to turn a 2-1 deficit into a good win for the team. John Beggs and Ray Dryden fought hard without reward..

Clark, boys 16-plus 100 yards backstroke. Although these swimmers re

ceived recognition the other club members who swam did great credit to the club — none having been placed below the top half in their events. It must be taken into account

that only four of the 18 swim mers who entered the champ ionships had swum at this level before and the standard is very high, North Lancs being the Northern Counties champions. Our congratulations to all the

swimmers who took part bring ing nothing but credit to them selves, their club and to Clitheroe.
