Mountaineers brave gales on hill climb
GALE force winds battered seven members of Clitheroe Mountaineering Club' during their crossing of the Howgill Fells on New Year’s Eve.
After leaving cars near
Tebay and Sedbergh, the party began a high level
crossing of the fell tops, with Arant Haw the first summit reached in mist and strong wind. •
The wind increased,
dramatically before Cal- ders, the next summit, and several times during the crossing of the pass between the two summits, members of the party were blown across the fell side or had to sit to avoid being blown oyer.
was very slow indeed and wind conditions worse than any encountered before on club outings.

More jobs axed by
Atkinson’s
THERE was more gloom for Ribble Valley workers this week when Clitheroe agricultural engineers At kinson’s announced 14 re dundancies among staff not involved in production at its Kendal S tre et factory. In a brief statement,
SEVENTY-FIVE children took part in the fun and games at the annual Sunday School Christmas party organised by .Clitheroe Parish Churcl) on Saturday.
1 Younger (top) and older, groups played separate games and had tea, with every-
1 one joining together for a disco with parents.
The party, organised by the Sunday
School teachers, ended with a visit from Father Christmas, who gave out sweets.
J
sales director Mr Roger Parker said that due to difficult trading conditions towards the end of 1980, and with no immediate prospect of an upturn in fortunes this year, the company had taken the “regrettable” step of dec laring the workers redun dant in an effort to reduce its overheads; The decision follows one
taken two months ago to axe eight or nine produc tion jobs because of the effects of the recession and the fact that business was not as brisk as the company would have liked. The latest redundancies
of Calders was reached and in continuing mist and wind, the party headed for the Calf, at 2,220ft. the highest point on the Howgill Fells.
Eventually the summit
