CLITHEROE man ager Ian Wilcox calls' up forward Jim Taylor for the squad for Saturday’s FA ■ Vase clash- with Old Black- burnians at Lammack (kick-off 3 p.m.).
Ian Eastwood steps
down to make way for Taylor,'who has been im pressive for -the reserve team.
The rest of the squad
comprises those players on duty in' Tuesday’s FA Cup match with Curzon Ashton.
They are asked to meet
for Saturday’s game at Shawbridge at 1-30 p.m.
Away from cup compet
itions, ' Mr Wilcox was satisfied with Clitheroe’s w in /o v e r Manchester Polytechnic, 1 although he- felt the margin could have been more emphatic.
“ Everybody worked
hard, which was very pleasing. Although we are not taking all our chances, we are creating the open: ings, so I’m not too wor ried . at this stage,” he said; .-
Tuesday’s game with
Curzon saw the return of defender Mick Ashcroft, who has been on holiday. His replacement Paul Bretherton, normally a midfield • p la yer , was warmly praised by his manager. Off the field, Burnley
and ex-Everton and Eng land p la y e r Martin Dobson has accepted an invitation to speak at a sportman’s dinner at the Castle Restaurant on Oc tober 14th. Organised by Clitheroe
and Whalley FCs, the evening’s other guest speaker will be Lanca shire CC chairman Mr Cedric Rhodes. Tickets, price £8:50, are available from Mr Cyril Whiteside (Tel.' Clitheroe 24587) or Mr Brian Whittaker (Tel. Whalley 2873). Season t ick e ts for
games at Shawbridge and 150 club tickets are avail able from treasurer Mr Keith Wilkinson (Tel. 26390). Club ties are also on, sale on match days, and sweaters will soon be available. Vice chairman Mr Malcolm Smith has resigned due to pressure of work. A replacement will be elected next week; Finally, Mr Whiteside
would - like to welcome everyone to a bumper bingo evening for club funds at the Castle Re- staui’ant on Tuesday. Ad-
missiqn at the door is £1, in c lu d in g a hot pot supper.

A late winner
Vale of Lune Trojans 7pts. Clitheroe 2nd 6
EVENTS conspired to prevent Clitheroe Rugby Club’s second team opening the season with a win. Howarth was injured in the first scrum, and two mi nutes from time Trojans kicked
a winning penalty goal. Emmott kicked a penalty
foal to give Clitheroe tne lead,
ut they lost it to a try by the home team before half-time. Trojans attacked dangerously
in the second half, but Clitheroe’s sound defence denied them a score. In the line-outs, Mercer, a new rer, was outstanding. Ilitheroe regained the lead when Emmott kicked another
: penalty and withstood heavy pressure until they conceded the penalty which lost them the game. Clitheroe: R. Wildman; I.
Fielding, T. Rose, H. Rudd, I. Richardson; M. Emmott, C. Roberts (capt.); R. Howarth, P. Dinsdale, J. Walker, I. Dux- bury, N. Ridehalgh, J. Mercer, D. Shepherd, K. Moore.

is top batsman
TOP scorer among the four- local cricket clubs in the Ribblesdale Cricket League in the season
just ended is Malcolm Dennett.. The Ribblesdale Wan-
- - /•
derers’ professional total led 636 runs, which in cluded a personal best of 129 against Earby in August, for an average of 33.47.
; He is closely followed
by W h a l le y ’ s S te v e Lawton-who finished with 562 runs but a superior average of 35.13. Lawton showed his true potential as a batsman with scores of more than 80 in each of three consecutive innings
. late in ’ the - season, - and Whalley have naturally retained him for next year. .
Incidentally, Whalley
were bowled out only once, and Wanderers twice. ■
In David Cottam, Wan
derers had the top-scoring amateur batsman with 480
■ runs for an average !■ of 28.23 while Billy Lamb, who often partnered him, scored 474 runs and aver aged 27.88. David Rigby led Read with. 416 runs (24.47), followed by David Hindle with 337 runs (24.07).
Whalley skipper John
Slinger did not touch last season’s figures but still scored 375 runs (28.84).
The best Whalley aver
age by an amateur was actually achieved by stumper Vic Morris who' had only seven innings, five of them not out. He scored 70 runs for an av erage of 35.
: Runs were a scarce
commodity at Chatburn Road where Clitheroe had a very poor season largely because some of the best batsmen were too often unavailable.
John Boden was top
scorer with 267 runs (17.80), followed by Simon WestHead 240 (24.00) and Charles Foulds also 240 (21.82). Keith Fawcett had only seven innings but scored 165 runs for an average of 33.00, being, twice not out.
Clitheroe professional
Brian Fielding took most wickets,- his 57 costing 13.21 runs, apiece. De nnett took 35 (22.83) and Lawton 33 (18.78).
Top amateur bowler
was Wanderers’ captain Bill Slinger with 41 (16.78). In 192 overs, 40 of them- maidens, John Staniforth took 3,6 (17.94) for Whalley. But Neil Weaver had the better average of 13.50 for his 10 wickets.
David Pollard took 10
for Read at a cost of 11.60 each, while Richard Good-
. way had the biggest haul with 32 (14.12).
Garth Sutcliffe took 39
w ick e t s (1 4 .8 9 ) fo r Clitheroe and was way ahead of the other sup porting bowlers, John Hill being next in line with 13 wickets (26.84).
