Record for Livesey

BY winning Clayton-le- Moors Harriers’ senior race at the club’s cross country championships held at Wilson Playing Fields, Clayton-le-Moors, on S a tu r d a y , Paul Livesey, of Clitheroe, established a club record of nine club championship titles in 12 years. His time for the eight-

mile distance was 53 mins 5 secs. Other local placings in

the race: 3, Ian Perrow (R e a d ) ; 3 0 , R o g e r Dewhurst (B olton -oy - Bowland); 32, George Brass (Clitheroe); 39, Ed Hill (Clitheroe). In the youths’ race over

four miles Graham Patten came second, with Derek Parrott (both Clitheroe) third . Duncan P ark (Clitheroe) came fourth in the boys’ race over two

miles. Running for Clayton-le-Moors

Harriers in the Chew Valley Fell Race at Greenfield, near Oldham, on Sunday, Shaun Livesey (Clitheroe) finished third in the youths’ race. His time for the four-mile

course, which includes 900ft. of climbing, was 30 mins. 44 secs. He was only 12 seconds

behind the winner, K. Benson (Bingley Harriers). Graham Patten (Clitheroe)

changed to his favourite sport on Sunday and took first place in the 17-19 age group at the North East Region orienteering event at Eston Nab, near Middles brough.

. He was representing Pendle

Forest Orienteers and nis time for the 6.8km course was 49 mins. 49 secs.

A double honour for lady

darters TWO Clitheroe lady darts players have become the first-ever Ribble Valley League players to be selected for Lancashire. The pair, Rose Brown,

of Monk Street, and Linda Briggs, of Brett Close, have been consistent per formers in the ladies’

league. Their reward is inclusion . . . .

in -the 10-strong county side which will take .on opponents from Cheshire, Gwent and Clwyd at Llan dudno a week on Sunday in the opening stage of an inter-county tournament organised 'by the National Darts Association. As well as her good work

as captain of the Black Horse A, Linda earned her place thanks to sterling efforts in organising the

town darts team. Rose, who skippers Join

ers A, forced her way into the limelight with some great play in a knock-out darts tournament sp on- , sored by a drinks firm. League secretary. Mrs

Joyce Holgate feels the selections are a great boost for-all Ribble Valley lady

Jpy darters.

'* ....... * “ It shows that the stan dard in the league is rising all the time ana that we are gaining some recognition for this,’’ she said.

Fight for survival

Trinity 2, Grindlcton 1

TRINITY picked up two precious points in their bid for First Division survival from a tough clash with fellow strugglers Grind

leton. The sticky pitch made

play difficult and the first half was goalless, despite Trinity’s appeal for a pen alty for handball. After the break, Trinity

keeper Mitcheson pulled off a couple of good saves before Stirzaker put them in front with a spot kick. The villagers snatched

an equaliser, but Neil Hodgkinsdn put Trinity back in. front with a good

goal. Grindleton had to play

out the final stages with ten men when, having brought on their substi tute, another player had to go off injured. Trinity: Mitcheson, Fishlock,

Easy for Waggon

Waggon and Horses 6, Rimington 1

THIS Division Two match proved to be very much a one-sided encounter and Waggon might well have won by an even greater margin. Steinhofel was in out

standing form and scored the home side’s, first four goals before Baldwin pul led one back .for the vis-- itors. Bradley and Mantle

scored the other two goals for Waggon whose defence was rarely troubled. It was sweet revenge for

a 6-2 defeat in the fourth, week of the season.

AN evenly balanced clash came : to an untimely end when a Hoghton defender broke a leg ana the referee decided to aban

this week. With the village playing field

being used for football during the winter, club members felt it would be unfit for league cricket in the summer and wanted to avoid players being injured because of the rough surface. It is a sad blow for the club,

had to accept defeat. , Former team captain Mr.John

Kenyon, of Stonelea, Grindle ton, said: “There is nowhere else we could play without running up considerable expenses ana our funds would not have been

able to cope.” However, it is hopd to put the

Keys fail to click

CROSS KEYS found themselves having to make a last-minute change for this challenging encounter with the Division One

leaders. G oalkeep er Walker

failed to turn up so Robin son was moved from mid- field to the custodian’s pos ition and Paul Jackson was brought into the side for his debut. Ground conditions had

much to do with making the game a scrappy one. Ditch m

The uneven piten meant that the ball had to be played before it bounced, and dribbling was almost impossible. Keys settled first' and Wilkinson hit the post with a long shot. The lead was conceded

to Ribblesdale when two defenders tangled with Robinson and allowed Woods to poke a soft goal. Keys continued to waste

chances and maintain pressure

. but the visitors increased their lead when Smith volleyed home from Johnston’s cross. Keys had another near-miss

when the ball stuck on the goal line and Dinsdale subsequently planted a 40-yard'drive against

the bar. It was not the Longridge

side’s day and they left tne field at the end wondering how on earth they had missed gathering both points.

Chatburn’s goal feast

Chatburn 11, Rimington Res 0

THE gulf between the first and third divisions of the League was clearly demonstrated when Chat- burn had Rimington Reserves as visitors in the first round of the Aitken Shield. The pattern of the play

was established in the opening minutes when Cnatburn romped to a three-goal lead. From then onwards,

football in the accepted sense was only a remote possibility, the only inter est being how many times would Cnatburn score. Hargreaves opened the

way with a shot that went in off the post. Dobson ventured upfield to pro vide the next and Young quickly brought the score

to three. Rimington’s discomfi

ture was complete when Hartley put tne ball into

his own net. H a rg rea v e s scored

Chatbum’s fifth from the p en alty sp o t , Young scored again and Conti cracked home another

goal. There was no respite for

Rimington after the break. Musgrove got his name on the score sheet and Young completed a hat-trick with the best goal of the game. Not content to remain at the heart of the home defence, Dobson again moved upfield to score, and Conti added the eleventh. Chatburn played most of

the game at half-pace but still completely mastered an over-worked Rimington

defence. H ow e v e r , Oldham

earned respect for a good performance as the vis itors’ centre-half and the team generally deserved credit for never giving up against such strong opposi

Clitheroe take the points

Ashton on Mersey 3rd 0, Clithcroe 1st 4pts

BOTH teams opened up play at every opportunity on a pitch ideal for attack ing rugby, and fitness proved the deciding factor. Early in the first half,

injuries robbed each side of a player. Clitheroe lost centre Alan Rudd who had to leave the field to have a cut forehead stitched. There was no score in

the first half, but in the second Clitheroe’s quick covering: began to - frus trate the more experienced home side. - Success in the scrums and

lineouts gave Clitheroe ample possession and, eventually, the winning points. An attacking kick was picked

up by-winger Dave Tattersall. He passed inside to Robin Lund, who sprinted and scored a try. in the corner.

Luck of the drawl

WEST B R AD FORD Ladies’ Hockey Club played two games at the weekend ana drew both. Saturday’s home match

with Burnley became a hard struggle on a heavy pitch and Burnley scored before the home defence had settled. Play later became more

"even and West Bradford applied much pressure but without result. Main features of a rather

scrappy second half were the excellent play of Margaret Dug dale at right back and the award of a penalty after Bumley had twice ignored warnings for per sistent early breaks at comers. Helen Chard scored from the

spot and despite a late series of Burnley, attacks the game

finished all square. Tired by Saturday’s dour

struggle, West Bradford were fortunate to get away with a draw against Blackpool on the seasiders’ ground on Sunday. West Bradford scored first,

Helen Chard adding to her mounting tally.,

Blackpool equalised quickly

and were unlucky not to profit more from their continuous

pressure.-
